Former Miss World Australia Courtney Thorpe has spoken about her public split with NRL star Jarrod Wallace, admitting her weight gain during pregnancy left her feeling insecure about herself.
Thorpe said the split has been the “biggest heartbreak” of her life.
The couple separated in September 2021 but chose against speaking publicly about the relationship breakdown in the best interest of their children.
The couple share two-year-old daughter Kennedy, who was born in 2019. Wallace has another two daughters from a previous relationship.
Thorpe admitted she was concerned Wallace would cheat on her after she gained 35kg.
According to the Courier Mail, Thorpe promised Wallace “I’ll get skinny” but was always reassured by the star forward that she was beautiful.
“Even when he travelled I would be an anxious mess, just calling him saying, do you promise you won’t cheat on me, promise you won’t cheat … and him swearing that he would never do that,” she said.
But when she asked to see his phone and saw messages from another woman, her “life gave way beneath her like a trap door”.
Wallace denied he was seeing another woman.
“I was in shock and I wanted to believe that my husband wouldn’t do this to me,” Thorpe told the Courier Mail.
“I feel so silly because I was so smug for so long that I had a man who wasn’t like that. I felt for all these other women I knew it was happening to.
“It felt so embarrassing – and how many people knew, is what I always ask myself.”
Thorpe said the pair went about their daily business, checking out a plot of land to build a house on. But then something clicked.
She told Wallace to stop the car and walked home with her daughter.
She urged women to not suffer in silence as she did in the latter part of her marriage.
Wallace has not commented on Thorpe’s claims.
Meanwhile, the former Queensland State of Origin star is expected to make a switch to the Dolphins next year.
Wallace has played for the Titans since 2017, but the 30-year-old’s contract expires at the end of 2022.
