Newly minted Commonwealth Games gold medallist Cody Simpson has made his second Australian team after being named alongside superstar Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack in the squad to take on the US in this month’s Duel in the Pool.
Simpson won a gold and sliver in Birmingham, his first major meet since the former pop star opted to jump back in the pool, and will join partner McKeon, the most successful Commonwealth Games athlete of all time, in the 33-person squad to battle the US team.
But there was no Kyle Chalmers or Ariarne Titmus when the final names were confirmed for the one-off battle that will take place at Sydney’s Olympic Park pool on August 20-21.
Mollie O’Callaghan, who won seven medals in Birmingham, including five gold, is also in the Australian squad that features a mix of established stars along with the next generation of Australian swimmers.
“Our athletes relish every chance to wear the gold cap as most recently shown by the outstanding results in Birmingham,” Dolphins head coach Rohan Taylor said.
“Any Australian team you make is special, but when presented with the opportunity to face our greatest rival in front of a home crowd, I know these athletes will step up to the challenge. Pressure is a privilege and it is one we embrace.
“This team is a wonderful mix of generational stars and those forging a path right on their heels and I’d encourage our fans to ensure they are there to witness first hand some of the best athletes in the world go to work.”
The squad members named on Wednesday are in addition to the 12 that were named before the Games in Birmingham and also include para star Ellie Cole.
