Terence Crawford’s team has called out Tim Tszyu for a world title blockbuster as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world looks to move up another weight class.
Tszyu, the WBO super welterweight champion, has been campaigning for an American world title bout, and that dream could come true in what would be a historic showdown with Crawford.
Starting this weekend, Main Event on Kayo Sports and Foxtel will be the exclusive home of UFC Pay-Per-View events in Australia.
Crawford has been offered other fights, but trainer Bernie Davis believes Tszyu is most deserving to take on the WBA, WBC and WBO welterweight champion if he decides to move up a weight class.
“We want to move up and still make history and still have something to get up for,” Davis said this week.
“Even though Boots (welterweight star Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis) is an attractive option, I think Tszyu is edging him just a little bit.
“Tszyu has fought the better competition, and I think he’s been looking spectacular in his fights and he has the country behind him.”
Tszyu has spoken in the past about wanting to fight Crawford, and it seems the American’s team has been keeping an eye on the Soul Taker too.
“This guy, Tszyu, is coming off a big win, beating (Brian) Mendoza, who is coming off a big win (over Sebastian Fundora),” Davis said.
“Tszyu has got the country behind him and has been looking good technically. He’s been looking better every fight, and he’s got the belt.”
The 29-year-old Tszyu quickly responded to Crawford’s camp’s call out, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “This is fireworks for sure.”
Just recently it looked as though Tszyu was going to have to take another fight in Australia as he was struggling to find a worthy opponent for a superfight in the US.
Although it’s promising signs for the Australian superstar, nothing is locked in, with Crawford’s team also revealing there are other fights that they would prefer.
“I think that would be (ideal to fight Tszyu), but we want Canelo,” said Davies.
“I don’t think that Teofimo (Lopez) is realistic, or Devin Haney is realistic just because he’s not going to do that.
“Crawford’s gonna kill him (Haney).”
While Tszyu is coming off a decision win over Mendoza on the Gold Coast in October, Crawford is riding high following his one-sided beat down of Errol Spence in July.
If it happens, Tszyu would not be the first Australian to fight Crawford, with Jeff Horn’s valiant attempt falling short via ninth round TKO six years ago.
