Queensland world-title hopeful Liam Wilson has vowed to knockout George Kambosos with talks underway for the duo to stage a State of Origin-style Australian super fight.

This masthead can reveal Wilson’s promoters No Limit have tabled a formal offer for ‘Mr Damage’ to take on ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos as both men look to pick up the pieces from recent world-title losses.

But first Wilson (13-3, 7KO) must dispose of Youssef Dib (21-1, 11KO) this Wednesday night in Wollongong on a Fox pay per view card headlined by Australia’s super bantamweight sensation Sam Goodman.

Wilson is coming off a crushing loss to Oscar Valdez in America, his second world-title defeat in 18 months, while Kambosos was outclassed by Ukraine legend Vasyl Lomachenko in May.

Traditionally a super featherweight, Wilson is making his debut at lightweight against Dib and hopes victory will set up a domestic blockbuster with Kambosos, who has suffered three losses in his past four fights.

“People ask me when I will fix up George Kambosos and knock him out, so I would love to do the job,” said Wilson ahead of his return to the ring at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre.

“I am doing this training camp as if it’s a fight-off for George Kambosos.

“That’s the reason I said I would move to lightweight — to fight George Kambosos.

“Dib has called out George Kambosos as well, so the winner should get him.

“I think it’s a great fight for the Australian public. He has a great resume and I think I have a great resume as well considering the fights I’ve had.

“So C’mon George ... let’s make this fight happen.”

No Limit are exploring a number of routes for Wilson as he continues his relentless pursuit of a world title, which would fulfil a deathbed promise to his father a decade ago.

One option is a possible world-title showdown at super featherweight with reigning WBA champion Lamont Roach (25-1-1).

The other is a State of Origin-style bout with New South Welshman Kambosos, whose career is at the crossroads after his loss to Lomachenko in Perth.

No Limit boss George Rose confirmed Australia’s No.1 boxing promoters have kicked off plans for Wilson to hunt down Kambosos, pending victory over Dib.

“We have made a formal offer to Kambosos and we’ll see if it interests them or not,” Rose said.

“We’ve approached Top Rank and we believe they are talking to Lou DiBella (Kambosos’ American promoter), so let’s see what happens.

“That’s a fight we would like to make and if it’s not Kambosos, we will chase a world title for him, possibly against Roach.

“This showdown with Dib is a massive fight for Liam.

“If he loses, it could be career over, but if wins, then George Kambosos is a realistic target.”

The 28-year-old Wilson, ranked No.11 with the WBO, says he can’t cop Kambosos and is adamant he is not a spent force after being stopped by Valdez in Arizona.

Wilson has the backing of Glen Jennings, who also manages Tim and Nikita Tszyu.

“Put this simply, me and people like George don’t mix,” he said.

“I don’t want to throw hateful words out there but we don’t mix at all, we are two completely different people.

“I’ve had to come back and reassess everything (after his loss to Valdez).

“I had a second shot at a world title and I fell short once again, so I’m back down the pecking order and have to prove to everyone what I think I am and that’s a world champion.

“It’s going to be an experiment coming up to lightweight.

“I might feel nice, strong and healthy at that weight and if all goes well, I will be gunning for George Kambosos.”
