Far North Queensland is gearing up to host perhaps the biggest boxing card regional Queensland has ever seen, with local legend and former world champion Liam Paro set to headline a monster fight night.
Paro, who holds a record of 25-1, will fight US fighter Jonathan Navarro in a double header which will feature another Queensland boxer in Liam Wilson.
Paro told this masthead he’s eager for the chance to fight on home turf with No Limit Boxing.
“I can’t wait, anyone that knows me knows I’ve been screaming for the big fights to come to Australia for a long time,” he said.
“I’ve been on the road abroad winning titles, but what a homecoming this will be for me.
“I’m a Mackay boy and getting a chance to fight back in North Queensland is special.
“It means the most to me. I’m a proud Aussie so to be able to fight on home soil in front of my family and local fans matters a lot.
“Hopefully it’s the first of many up in North Queensland.”
Wilson, who hails from Caboolture in northern Brisbane, said the chance to return to Cairns for the first time in many years was an exciting prospect.
“I fought here many years ago as an amateur, the place has changed a fair bit since then,” he said.
“This is something new for me as a professional to compete up here.
“I’m back down to my original weight division in super featherweight.”
While Paro’s roots are in NQ, the 29-year-old said he hasn’t been in the region since he was ‘14 or 15’.
“I’m glad to be back here, and I’m looking forward to settling down here once I’ve finished up my career,” he said.
“I’ve got a partner at home now and a little one, so I have to think of them to.”
Both fighters said they have a great deal of admiration for what the other provides in and out of the ring.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for Liam (Wilson) and what he brings to the ring, and I’m sure the feeling’s mutual,” Paro said.
“The fans get to win big in this one, and my hope is people pack out the venue so we can get more fights here.”
They each said they would like to see more fights take place in Australia as a whole.
“I always wanted to defend my title here, unfortunately I was never able to do it,” Paro said.
“Mackay’s a little bit away from Cairns, but whenever we’re in this area we fall under that NQ banner and support one another.”
“I know what professional boxing in Australia can achieve if the local community gets behind it,” Wilson said.
The Paro vs Navarro and Wilson vs Aryton Gimenez fights will be the headliners for a monster card which is set to feature a host of other amateur and pro fighters at Cairns Convention Centre on June 25.
