Tszyu clinches landmark deal

He has been labelled the scariest athlete in Australian sport.

Now Toese Vousiutu is hellbent on sending shockwaves through Australian boxing after joining forces with the promotional team that has turned Tim Tszyu into a world champion.

Nicknamed ‘The Boss’, Vousiutu has inked a deal with No Limit, Australia’s No.1 boxing promoters who have bankrolled Tszyu’s ruthless surge to super welterweight world-title supremacy.

There was a time not so long ago when Vousiutu was so feared the 110kg hard-hitting heavyweight struggled to get fights on the domestic scene.

But the 33-year-old is hoping his ascension to the No Limit stable of fighters – which includes Tim and Nikita Tszyu, Liam Wilson and Issac Hardman – can help Vousiutu get busy and flourish into a world-class heavyweight.

Previously based in Melbourne, Vousiutu (7-1, 6KO) has moved to Brisbane and is primed to dominate the domestic heavyweight scene on Fox Sports’ fight cards in 2024.

“It’s a blessing to be signed up by No Limit,” said Vousiutu, currently ranked Australia’s sixth-best heavyweight.

“It’s a reward for all the hard work and the sacrifices I have made that has led to this.

“It has been a struggle to find opponents. Right from the very start of my career, a lot of guys won’t fight me, but it’s good to now have the No Limit boys behind me.

“With their backing, I’m hoping they can line up more quality opponents for me and I’ll fight more regularly.

“They believe in me. They can see the talent I have and I want to reward their faith.

“I would like to think I’m scary in the ring, but outside the ring I don’t like trouble and I show respect to everyone.”

For a big man, The Boss not only has frightening power, but quick feet.

Underlining his talent, Vousiutu produced a huge boilover at amateur level, beating Joe Goodall, one of Australia’s best heavyweights who won bronze at the 2017 World Championships, to qualify for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

No Limit boss George Rose believes Vousiutu has the potential to win the Australian heavyweight title.

“I’m excited with Toese’s signing,” Rose said.

“Any heavyweight with the skill and power of Toese is someone to get excited about.

“He is going to be even better over the next 12 months.

“Win or lose he has always been in entertaining fights. He’s going to keep Australia entertained again this year as he steamrolls through the heavyweight division.”

Vousiutu’s boxing advisor Steve Scanlan, who sponsored Tszyu in the formative stages of his career, revealed most opponents run a mile from the 187cm behemoth.

“I don’t know many sports people scarier than Toese,” Scanlan said.

“Out of the 20 boxers that were in my management stable, Toese was the hardest guy to match.

“People would say yes and then they would pull out for all sorts of reasons.

“Toese is Australia’s most avoided heavyweight.

“He has frightening power and he can actually box as well, so when Toese comes to bang, no-one wants a piece of that.”

Vousiutu believes he can go all the way and has called out Australia’s best heavyweights, including top dog, Brisbane-born Justis Huni.

“Whoever is in the top 10 in Australia at the moment, I will happily fight them,” he said.

“It’s my dream to win a world title. I know I’m a long way from that, but I’m putting my head down and whatever is thrown at me along the way will be part of the journey.

“In the heavyweight game, you can’t fear anyone.

“They are here to take my head off, but I want to go in for the kill first.”
