Australia is in an unprecedented golden era of boxing, with recognised world champions both male and female, and several hot contenders on the verge of title shots.

When compiling a pound-for-pound list of our top 50, there is more to consider than just ranking or championship status.

As boxing fans know all too well, rankings can be as confusing as a set of Ikea instructions, and promoters and managers can pay to have their guys climb quickly up the ladder despite scant records.

In compiling this list, weight was given to the obvious - titles and ranking - but also the toughness of opposition, knockout ratio, skill and speed, and the willingness to travel abroad to take on overseas rivals.

And then there is the subjective potential I see in the young rookies looking to make their mark in the squared circle in years to come.

What is abundantly clear is that Australia has more world-class fighters competing now than at any other point in history, with a staggering 18 male fighters ranked in the top 15 by one of the big four sanctioning bodies, as well as one male and two female bonafide world champions.

Therefore, 2023 shapes up as potentially our most successful year.
