Aussie Jason Moloney has taken to running Mike Tyson’s old track as he bids to shock boxing world

Four times every week right now, Jason Moloney runs a mile of gravel made famous by the world’s baddest man.

Officially, the place is called Sunset Park, Las Vegas.

A picturesque running strip which, circling a lake, sits roughly 15 minutes from the city’s famed gambling strip. But unofficially?

“It’s the Mike Tyson Mile,” the Aussie boxer reveals.

“Years ago when preparing for fights here in Las Vegas, Tyson hated having nowhere to run but on the roads.

“So he asked council to build him a running track.”

Which of course, they did.

“Great spot, too,” Moloney continues. “And cool to be preparing where the world’s baddest man once did exactly the same.”

So what chance this gutsy, little bantamweight can also go shock the fight world?

Currently living and training in the Las Vegas suburbs, Moloney is preparing for what shapes as the biggest upset in Australian boxing history — his world title blockbuster with Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue on November 1.

More than simply being the greatest bantamweight on the planet, 27-year-old Inoue (19-0) is also ranked, pound for pound, as the third best anywhere.

Which is why, already, Las Vegas oddsmakers have listed the undefeated Japanese star a 5/1 on favourite for the MGM Grand headliner.

Same as US boxing analysts, in every prediction spoken, written or Tweeted so far, have also picked the champ.

All of which fuels Moloney as he runs that Tyson Mile.

“The fact everyone thinks Inoue is unbeatable — I love it,” he says from inside camp.

“Because beating this guy, it makes me a superstar. Changes my life.

“This is my chance to shock the world.”

Apart from following in the footsteps of Iron Mike, Moloney is also sparring daily with an international team of boxers headed by twin brother Andrew.

Others in the group include Chilean Andres Campos, Puerto Rican Jonathan Rodriguez, American Jesse Rosales and young Brisbane fighter Vegas Larfield.

Together, the group are all bunkered down in a large two-storey property which, located just off the strip, has been provided by famed US promoter Bob Arum.

The world title headliner is the Australian’s second trip to Las Vegas this year, having already beaten Mexican Leonardo Baez at his first MGM Grand headliner in June.

When not training at Arum’s nearby Top Rank gym, the group are using all free downtime to challenge each other at games of table tennis and pool.

Team Moloney’s Las Vegas digs also include a large backyard pool, spa for recovery and plenty of space for impromptu training sessions.

Given the continuing COVID dramas Stateside, Moloney said he and his team rarely leave their Las Vegas digs, other than to shop for groceries, visit the gym or run Tyson’s mile.

“And I’m loving camp like we have it now — absolutely no distractions,” he says.

“Obviously training takes up a large chunk of my day, but then in the downtime there’s a group of us here in the house so it’s easy to stay entertained.

“Even when I’m back home in Australia, it’s a simple life.

“Family and boxing – that’s be me for the best part of 10 years.

“And now I have the chance to live my dream. I’m ready to go do something special.”
