Melbourne Renegades have missed finals for the fifth time in six season since winning the title in BBL08 after a narrow seven-run loss to ladder leader Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
After the Hurricanes took 28 runs off the power surge to make it 32 runs required off 30 balls, the Renegades bounced back with the next three overs going for 13 runs make it 17 off the final two overs at Ninja Stadium.
Then Sutherland’s bold move to bring on debutant Callum Stow paid off with the left-arm leg-spinner’s over going for nine runs to make it eight needed off the last over.
But as he has done on multiple occasions this season, finisher Tim David survived a review on the third-last ball before flicking a six over square leg against Tom Rogers to make it one needed off three balls.
David got the winning runs the next ball to score the Hurricanes a sixth-straight win to re-claim top spot on the table.
It was a devastating blow for strong performer Jacob Bethell who scored a game-high 87 in the first innings to lift his side to a defendable total of 7-154.
Bethell also took 2-29, including one of the three tight overs the Renegades bowled after the surge which Stow (1-31) and Adam Zampa (0-23) also bowled.
The result in front of 7,454 fans continued a trend at the venue where 11 of the last 13 games have been won by the team chasing.
It was a fifth loss in six games for the Renegades.
Billy Stanlake has left the ground after a couple of false starts due to injuring his shoulder with the diving catch earlier.

POWERSURGE KINGS
The Hurricanes were questioned at times for their tactics of holding Tim David and Matthew Wade back in the order, but doubters were proved wrong after another onslaught in the powersurge.
In the two-over surge, the game was over with the Hurricanes taking 28 runs from it to the bring the equation to 32 off 30 balls.
Matthew Wade starred with 18 runs off the second over while David hit a four off his first ball.
It follows strong surges of 1-41 against the Strikers, 0-38 against Thunder and 0-33 against Sixers this season.
Wade batting at number six finished with 36 off 23 balls and David, who came in behind him was unbeaten on 24 off 15 balls.
BETHELL COUNTERPUNCH
After coming in a 2-9, 21-year-old English international Bethell played a sublime knock to get the Renegades out of trouble.
Bethell’s knock was highlighted by a fast finish where he hit back-to-back sixes in the 18th over off Nathan Ellis before going one better with six, six, four in three deliveries the next over against Riley Meredith.
His two-over blitz took the Renegades from 114 after 17 overs to 148 after 19.
JAKE STRUGGLES
Jake Fraser-McGurk continued his tough BBL season with the hard-hitting batter this time run-out for a run-a-ball seven.
The 22-year-old who hit 330 runs for the Delhi Capitals in last year’s IPL, has notched 93 runs at an average of 10.33 this campaign.
STANLAKE INJURED
Stanlake went down with a shoulder injury after a diving catch in the third over of the first innings an
The 30-year-old dived forward and took a strong catch down low before landing on his right shoulder where he pulled up sore holding it in some grief.
The quick, who bowls with his right arm, came from the field following the dismissal of Josh Brown but then returned to try and bowl the next over, although he was unable to complete his action on two attempts.
Stanlake then immediately went off for medical attention and was ruled out for the rest of the game.
With the Qualifier less than a week away, it is unlikely that Stanlake would recover in time unless it is temporary pain.
