The Casey Cavaliers have confirmed one of their biggest signings in club history.
2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Alice Kunek has been confirmed as the Cavaliers’ latest signing for the upcoming NBL1 South season.
Kunek, 33, is currently playing for the Townsville Fire in the WNBL and will make the move south when the national competition comes to an end.
Throughout her career, she has enjoyed stints with several WNBL clubs and time in Europe, last playing for Sopron Basket in Hungary.
It’s a move which will see her link up with Casey coach Alex Palazzolo, a mentor Kunek has an existing connection with.
“Really looking forward to joining the Cavaliers for the 24 NBL1 season. The club has been so professional and I’m excited to keep helping strengthen their junior programs and give back to the basketball community,” she said.
“I have known Alex for a long time and always loved the way he coaches and have a lot of respect for him.
“I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my game, improve and to help this group make the playoffs.”
Palazzolo expressed his own excitement at seeing the Victorian product, who moved to the AIS as a teenager, in club colours.
“Having Alice join the Casey Cavs for the upcoming NBL1 season is a huge coup for our club,” he said.
“Alice is an amazing human being and brings a wealth of WNBL and international experience and combining this with her leadership, high basketball IQ, physicality, scoring prowess and ability to defend multiple positions will ensure our team is well placed to contend in 2024.
“I know Alice will set the standard for our group and that her teammates will benefit from having her play alongside them.
“We can’t wait for Alice to join the Casey Cavs at the completion of her WNBL commitments and our supporters should be excited with the team we’ve put together for the season ahead.”
In its own statement, Casey said it was confident this year’s women’s roster would be “very competitive” and pushing for finals.
The season gets underway on April 6.
