South East Melbourne Phoenix has bolstered its shooting ranks in a bid to reach the NBL finals, signing Devondrick Walker.

The 27-year-old Texan replaces released import centre Keith Benson.

“I’m excited to join the Phoenix,” Walker said.

“It’s a new club with a healthy aspiration of getting to the top of the playoffs.

“Every game matters at this point so it’s an exciting time of year for the club, and I’m honoured to be a part of it.”

The 196cm wing, who flirted with the NBL in the past, signed with Perth Wildcats for the 2017-18 season but a foot injury stopped him from making his NBL debut.

“It seems a bit surreal after missing the opportunity to play for Perth a few seasons ago ‘til now playing my first NBL game against Perth,” Walker said.

“We all know the NBL is a great environment, so I’m excited to see and enjoy the moment.”

Walker played most recently in France and spent the past four seasons in the NBA G-League.

He crossed paths with Phoenix captain Mitch Creek in 2017, the pair suiting up for the Utah Jazz Summer League team.

Walker arrives in Melbourne this week and must suit up in seven of the last eight Phoenix games to qualify for the post-season, should the green team make it.

“Missing the opportunity to play in the NBL has always bothered me, so being able to come back and play is something I always wanted to do,” Walker said.

“And of course, who doesn’t like the beach in January.”
