RJ Hampton spruiks NBL Next Stars experience to NBA hopefuls

NBA Draft lock RJ Hampton is encouraging fellow prospects to make the move to the NBL, saying the physicality of the league will hold him in good stead to make the next step. And he believes they are listening.

He’ll be going against NBA players next year, but teenage jet RJ Hampton says the physicality of his NBL “gap year” will hold him in good stead.

Hampton, 18, has taken the path of playing professionally, rather than going to college, as he awaits NBA eligibility, and says there has been no shortage of prospects blowing up his phone to pick his brain about his experience with the New Zealand Breakers.

He tells them it’s very different playing against men, rather than teens around his own age — and he’s loving it.

“All the time, they ask me what it’s like and how I’m liking it,” Hampton said.

“Mentality-wise, I think it’s a huge step.

“I think the guards are a lot more physical. You do have some bigs in high school who are pretty physical too, but I think it’s a lot more physical and I like that a lot.

“Some players will definitely look into coming into the NBL for that gap year.

“The NBL is a great league.”

Fresh off going toe-to-toe with good mate and fellow Next Star LaMelo Ball, Hampton has already turned his attention to a Saturday night date with Melbourne United.

He says he knows what to expect from his opponent, United point guard Melo Trimble, after squaring off with the Maryland native in pre-season.

“My match-up really is Melo Trimble, just try and contain him. He guarded me last time, so I just have to deal with him,” Dallas-born Hampton said.

“I know he’s a fast-paced point guard who wants to get down hill and shoot the ball, which he’s very good at.

“He puts a lot of pressure on the defence, so we’ve just got to contain him and I just hope I can.”
