‘Needs to be sorted out’: Boomers star Joe Ingles calls for change after scary slip in Finland win

Australian veteran Joe Ingles has called for action after a scary incident in the Boomers’ big win over Finland in their World Cup opener.

Australian veteran Joe Ingles has called for action after he slipped over in the second quarter of the Boomers’ big win over Finland in their World Cup opener.

Australia overcame a shaky start to run away 98-72 winners and while neither team suffered any significant injuries, Ingles warned that could change if the court conditions don’t.

Ingles was spotted visibly frustrated with one official after he slipped over, having to get his bloodied elbow cleaned up and later strapped.

Joe Ingles is yelling at what looks like a FIBA official. Ingles slipped on a wet spot that wasn’t swept for a considerable amount of time, and has a very bloodied elbow. He’s getting treatment on the bench, the elbow is being strapped.

“You saw Markkanen slipped three times in one possession, I slipped a couple of times,” Ingles told reporters post-game, including Basket News.

“There were also stickers on the floor that weren’t cleaned well enough, but it needs [to be] sorted out for the caliber of players this tournament has. You don’t want to see someone injured because of a sticker.”

Australia teammate Josh Giddey also described the court as “slippery” according to Basket News.

“Hopefully there are no injuries because of it,” Giddey added.

While Ingles was understandably upset in the moment, he said he wanted to “apologise” to the FIBA official who he had remonstrated.

“I saw him talking with the floor wipers, and I thought that he must be in charge,” Ingles said.
