A member of Australia’s Olympic men’s basketball squad has been charged with assaulting a woman in Melbourne.

Mitch Creek, 28, who co-captains the South East Melbourne Phoenix in the NBL, has been charged by Victoria Police with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault over an incident in the western suburbs in November.

The NBL and Phoenix said in a joint statement on Monday night they were “deeply concerned” about the nature of the charges and “take this matter extremely seriously”.

Creek will not train or play with the club until further notice.

His lawyer, Casey Isaacs of Caldicott Lawyers, confirmed the charges had been served which he said were “all denied and will be defended in court”.

“Given there are now court proceedings afoot we won’t make any further comment,” Mr Isaacs said.

Originally from Horsham, Creek spent eight seasons with the Adelaide 36ers, before a stint in Germany and then playing a total of five NBA games for the Brooklyn Nets and Minnesota Timberwolves.

He has been with South East Melbourne Phoenix since 2019.

He will appear at Sunshine Magistrate’s Court on April 1.
