NFL star Henry Ruggs III was driving his Corvette 251km/h seconds before allegedly causing a fiery car crash that left a 23-year-old woman dead, Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney Eric Bauman said in court.
That’s according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal while the Las Vegas Sun reports Ruggs, the former Las Vegas Raiders receiver who was cut by the football team on Wednesday and is facing felony driving under the influence (DUI) charges, also had a blood-alcohol content of .161, Bauman said. That is more than twice Las Vegas’ legal limit of .08.
Bauman said the speed of Ruggs’ vehicle was 204km/h when the airbags were deployed, and that a dog was killed in the crash.
Ruggs, 22, appeared before a judge in Las Vegas Justice Court in a wheelchair. His mugshot shows him wearing a neck brace with a cut on his nose.
Judge Joe Bonaventure set Ruggs’ bail at $AUD200,000, and ordered him to abstain from alcohol and other controlled substances. He was ordered not to drive and to surrender his passport. Ruggs is due back in court on November 10.
“What we have here is a young man who has never been in trouble before,” Ruggs’ lawyer David Chesnoff told the court.
Ruggs was travelling with his girlfriend Kiara Kilgo-Washington at the time of the crash.
Washington, who goes by the name Rudy Washington, reportedly suffered injuries.
She announced in September that she accepted a position as the head of marketing for the Raiders. The couple share a daughter, Kenzil, who turned one in May.
If convicted, Ruggs’ DUI charge causing death holds a two-to 20-year prison sentence. He could face a sentence of one to six years for the reckless driving charge.
