It wouldn’t be a Super Bowl celebration without Queen’s We are the Champions. But the winning team’s hulking left tackle is just about the last person you would expect to flawlessly belt out Freddie Mercury’s classic and lead one million fans in a spine-tingling singalong.
Five days after demolishing the Kansas City Chiefs, it was Australia’s first Super Bowl champion Jordan Mailata who wowed a raucous Philadelphia crowd to cap off the Eagles’ victory parade.
“I’m not one for speeches but I know how to sing,” the rugby league convert said.
“I’m going to need some help. I want to sing a song that everyone here should know – it kind of sounds like this.”
Mailata’s impromptu performance came after he spread the love on Valentine’s Day, using his speech to thank the wives and girlfriends who supported the Super Bowl champions.
“We can’t forget about our significant others,” he said, after his teammates did.

The Australian was already adored in the City of Brotherly Love before the parade on Friday (local time), although it didn’t hurt that he also sopped during the celebrations to give his hat away to a young fan.
“This is amazing. I love our fans, I love our city, I love what they’re about,” Mailata said as he and his teammates triumphantly travelled through the streets of Philadelphia.
Eagles supporter Shaun Barden, who was wearing Mailata’s #68 jersey, praised the Aussie champ: “Amazing human being, that’s what we’ve got,” he said.

Asked why, given almost every other fan was sporting the jerseys of quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley, he said: “He’s a beast, he’s a f***ing beast … He’s the reason we were taking care of business.”
Australian expat Mick Dunn was also in the crowd to celebrate Mailata and the victory for the Eagles, his wife Kim’s hometown team.
“We had to be here … My wife’s from Philly so we had to represent,” he said, having travelled together from California with their son Ben.
“Mailata’s a great guy, great player.”
Some Eagles supporters camped overnight at the Museum of Art to watch the celebrations on the famous Rocky Steps. When their heroes eventually arrived on a freezing day in open-top buses, fans climbed on statues, trees and portable toilets to get a glimpse of them.
“I told myself that when I got drafted that I wouldn’t come to the Rocky Steps until I won the championship,” Hurts told the crowd, as they chanted “MVP, MVP, MVP”.
“Now here we are.”
The crowd was so loud that most did not notice a shooting near the end of the parade, with two women reportedly injured. Emergency services said they were both in a stable condition.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was also injured in the festivities, suffering a gash to the head after he was struck by a beer can.
But the team’s owner Jeffrey Lurie said Valentine’s Day was the perfect occasion to celebrate Philadelphia’s “love affair” with the Super Bowl champions.
“We share an amazing bond that is second to none,” he said.
“You’ve been rewarded with another world championship.”
