A baseball star has been slammed after he made an amateurish blunder and didn’t even bother to try and clean up his mess.

The Boston Red Sox slumped to a humiliating 28-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday (AEST) as one player was torched for an amateurish error.

The Blue Jays set a franchise record for runs and came up just short of the Major League Baseball (MLB) record for runs in a game.

It looked like Toronto might break MLB’s modern day record of 30 runs in a game when they had 27 runs in the sixth inning, but they were held scoreless in the seventh and eighth and added one more run in the ninth.

It was clear Boston was having a shocker in the third inning when Toronto’s Raimel Tapia shanked a fly ball with the bases fully loaded that looked certain to be caught out.

But Red Sox centre fielder Jarren Duran seemingly lost sight of the ball in the lights and it flew way over his head onto the red dirt.

Tapia took full advantage of the blunder, racing around the bases for a rare inside-the-park grand slam.

Duran made his mistake even worse by not bothering to chase back after the ball, leaving a teammate to clean up his mess.

Fans couldn’t believe their eyes and said the inside-the-park grand slam was like something out of Little League.

Baseball analyst Bernie Pleskoff tweeted: “Jarren Duran can’t find a fly ball in the lights in CF. Ball goes over his head and falls in deep centre. Duran turns around, sees the ball, and doesn’t go after it.

“The result? Grand slam homer for @BlueJays Tapia. That was a horrible look. Why not hustle after the ball?”

Jarren Duran had no idea where the ball was.

Bloomberg’s Shawn Donnan said: “Game was so ugly that it included an inside the park grand slam thanks to a rookie centre fielder who didn’t even run after the ball after it sailed over his head…”

CBS’ Devin Heroux said it was “absolutely mind boggling stuff”.

Speaking after the game, Duran said his teammate Alex Verdugo was already closer to the ball and by that stage there was no point chasing after it.

“Obviously I should have taken a step or two, but he was already going to beat me to the ball so I just didn’t want to get in his way,” he said.

“What if I sprint into him and collide with him, or something like that?

“Next time I know to take one or two steps but he was already going to beat me to the ball.”

It was the second inside-the-park slam in Toronto’s history — both of them at Fenway Park. The other came off Bob Stanley in 1989.
