THE Aussie flavour in San Francisco is getting stronger after the 49ers agreed to terms with undrafted Sydneysider Blake Muir.
The Baylor offensive lineman will reportedly sign a contract later this week to join Australian sensation Jarryd Hayne in the Bay Area.
Muir, who is listed at 195cm and 134kg, began his college career at Hawaii before becoming a two-year starter with the Bears.
Bay Area News Group reporter Cam Inman wrote Muir will “initially be buried” among a “logjam of guards on the 49ers depth chart”.
“The 49ers addressed their need for improved guard play with two key additions: six-year veteran Zane Beadles in free agency and first-round pick Joshua Garnett in Thursday’s first round,” Inman wrote.
“The 49ers still have four who started last season at guard with mixed results: Andrew Tiller, Marcus Martin, Jordan Devey and Erik Pears. Brandon Thomas (2014 third round) and Ian Silberman (2015 sixth round) have yet to play an offensive snap in their careers.
“Two other potential options are fifth-round draft picks John Theus and Fahn Cooper, who played tackle in the Southeastern Conference and could be converted to guard if need be, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said Saturday. Muir’s best shot at sticking around as a rookie likely will be on the practice squad.”
Muir, who showed his strength by bench-pressing 102kgs 28 times at the Baylor Pro Day, played American football for the Sutherland Seahawks while growing up in Australia.
His brother, Sean, is also at Baylor. You can read more about the brothers at their blog here.
