West Coast premiership hero Adam Hunter has died aged 43.

It’s understood that Hunter passed away overnight in Bunbury, two hours south of Perth.

Hunter will forever be remembered for his role in West Coast’s 2006 premiership, kicking the sealer against Sydney to deliver the Eagles their third flag.

In an era that produced some of the club’s biggest names, Hunter forged his place in West Coast folklore as one of the AFL’s best swingmen who could turn games off his own boot.

Hunter played 151 games for the Eagles, kicking 86 goals. He was forced to retire in 2009 due to injury.

“We are devastated by the loss of 2006 Premiership Eagle Adam Hunter,” West Coast said in a statement on social media.

“Our thoughts are with his family, teammates and friends.”

West Coast players and staff held a minutes silence before training on Wednesday morning led by chief executive Don Pyke.

Just before 10am, the club made their way out to stand in front of a visual tribute on the big screen at Mineral Resources Park. The players wore black armbands as they stood shoulder to shoulder. There was also a sombre mood amongst fans in attendance for open training.

“He was always one of my favourite players,” one fan said.

“It’s a shame that someone so young so full of promise and with a great record behind him…he will be missed by everyone at the club, his family and fans.”

WA Police said in a statement: “About 12.20am this morning, 5 February 2025, police and St John Ambulance were called to a residence in Withers upon a report of a non-responsive male.

“Upon arrival paramedics immediately commenced first aid, however; the man could not be revived.

“The 43-year-old man was declared deceased at the scene. The death is being considered non-suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.”

Hunter’s death comes after former Brisbane player Troy Selwood and Essendon VFL coach Dale Tapping passed away on Tuesday in a tragic week for the AFL industry.

Younger brother Scott Selwood also played alongside Hunter in the twilight of his career.

Selwood’s twin brother Adam was a premiership teammate of Hunter at the Eagles.

Hunter played for Swan Districts his junior club South Bunbury after hanging up the boots, winning a reserves flag with the Tigers in 2022.

It’s understood that Hunter had been welcomed back into the fold at the South Bunbury football and was a regular volunteer after a somewhat turbulent postscript to his AFL career that included domestic violence charges.
