TRADE period is done and dusted, and you're eyeing what new young talent your club is about to bring through the door.

But there's one problem. Your club doesn't possess as many high picks as you'd like.

Do your hear us (especially Essendon and Adelaide fans)?

Well, don't fret. While the science of recruiting is becoming more and more exact - AFL scouts are seemingly nailing their talent with higher picks more frequently - there are still plenty of late-order gems to be found.

But here, we'll take a look at some recent 'diamonds in the rough' from past national drafts.

Remember a guy named James Hird? He was selected with pick 79 in the national draft back in 1990.

Now we're not digging back that far, but to keep things clear cut, we'll look at pick 50 and beyond - and have looked at the period from 2000 to 2010.

But take note! We're excluding father-son selections, and of course by focusing on the national draft only, we're also discounting all rookie picks and subsequent upgrades.

So no Dean Cox, Matthew Boyd or the like here.

* Several clubs may not 'use' their late picks on fresh talent in 2013 at the draft table, instead offering to pass or simply upgrade rookies from their own list.
