AFL
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News.
It might have been a smaller fixture than usual in the VFL that didn’t mean there was any less action.
Here are all the key talking points.
CATS TOP PICK PUTS HIS HAND UP
Geelong’s top pick in last year’s draft, Jhye Clark, is moving closer to an AFL debut after another standout performance.
Clark collected 29 disposals, five marks, four tackles and two clearances in the Cats’ eight-point win over Coburg at the weekend.
The Cats almost shot themselves in the foot with their inaccuracy in front of goal kicking 6.20 (56) to 7.6 (48).
Jye Chalcraft found plenty of the footy with 33 disposals and a goal.
Meanwhile, Ben Jepson was the major ball winner for the Lions with 30 touches.
BIG PERFORMANCE FROM FOOTSCRAY STAR
It was a big afternoon for Lachie Sullivan as Footscray recorded a five-point win over Carlton on Saturday.
Sullivan finished with 39 disposals including 13 clearances while ex-Collingwood utility Caleb Poulter impressed with 26 touches and a goal.
Jaxon Binns was the major ball winner for the Blues with 28 and a goal.
GIANT-SIZED DETERMINATION AT THE DEATH
The GWS Giants showed plenty of fight in an epic clash with Port Melbourne.
Leading by as much as 27 points midway through the second term, they found themselves down heading into the fourth.
They took back control, before holding out late and keeping Port goalless over the last 10 minutes to score by two points.
That win should give them plenty of confidence coming into a big clash with Footscray.
RICCARDI’S QUARTET GETS THE JOB DONE
A nice haul of four majors for Giants key forward Jake Riccardi keeps his name in the AFL discussion.
Two of those came in the fourth as his team desperately needed a spark after blowing a big lead, and he delivered.
To go along with 20 disposals and seven hit-outs, it was a very polished display from the 23-year-old.
NAISMITH ENHANCES HIS MID-SEASON DRAFT PROSPECTS
Nobody will be surprised if Port Melbourne ruckman Sam Naismith is back on an AFL list after the Mid-Season Draft.
Naismith produced another impressive display with 24 disposals against GWS.
HAWTHORN YOUNG GUNS RESPOND, MELBOURNE’S DEPTH ON SHOW
Despite going down to Casey by 30 points, there were positive performances from Hawthorn youngsters sent back to Box Hill.
Connor Macdonald and Cam Mackenzie collected 37 and 30 disposals respectively to respond to their axings in a strong way.
Former Collingwood midfielder Callum Brown had 36 of his own for the Hawks.
For Casey, James Harmes had 27 touches while Jake Melksham booted five.
HARLEY REID DEBUTS
All eyes were on Harley Reid at the weekend as he made his VFL debut with Carlton.
He played the first half entirely as an onballer, attending every centre bounce for which he was on the field.
Reid finished with 13 disposals.
