TWITTER almost universally scoffed at Eddie McGuire's apology to Adam Goodes and indigenous Australia.

Most tweeters weren't buying McGuire's excuse that he was simply tired when suggesting aboriginal player Adam Goodes should be used to promote a new production of King Kong.

The hashtag #stopdigging began trending across Australia as McGuire's press conference continued, with the Collingwood president continuing to push his anti-racist record.

Rival radio host and comedian Dave Hughes was also quick to weigh into the debate.

Another Tweeter @HenryBeans said McGuire had been "reading from (Catholic archbishop) George Pell's 'Guide to Effective Public Relations'".

Others attacked McGuire personally, declaring he was a racist who should be held to account.

But the embattled president did garner some support, with some tweeters clearly sick of this week's ongoing racial saga.
