GWS captain Toby Greene has won his second Kevin Sheedy Medal as the Giants’ club champion for 2023.

In a tense count, Greene narrowly came home with the award with 71 votes over Stephen Coniglio and Tom Green, who shared second place with 66 votes.

Greene is just the third Giant to become a dual club champion following his Kevin Sheedy Medal in 2016. However, he received the award this year after what was the best season of his career.

He kicked 66 goals as the Giants narrowly missed out on a grand final appearance. Greene’s leadership was also widely praised as the club bounced back from a bottom-four finish to make a preliminary final in Adam Kingsley’s first season as coach.

It’s the latest accolade for Greene, who also earned his third All-Australian blazer and was given the ultimate honour of captaining that prestigious side.

“This is a fitting recognition for Toby to top off a fantastic season for him individually,” Giants coach Adam Kingsley said.

“We all know the calibre of player that Toby is and what he is capable of, but to see him continue his on-field dominance while leading his side to finals has been sensational and a pleasure to coach.

“He’s one of the toughest and most exciting players in the game and loves to stand up in big moments, which is essentially what got him across the line in what was a thrilling vote count this year.”

Greene also went home with the Members’ Choice Award and the Giants’ goal of the year for his matchwinner against the Swans in round seven.

Several of the Giants’ breakout stars were also recognised for their strong contributions in 2023.

Jack Buckley received the Coaches Award after playing every game this season following his stunning return from an ACL injury.

Kieren Briggs, who turned into one of the form ruckmen in the competition by the end of the season, won the Giants’ Community Award for his work with Ronald McDonald House.

Finn Callaghan rounded out the AFL awards with the emerging midfielder named the Giants’ Rising Star for 2023.
