Being stuck in a lift is a stroke of bad luck that at some stage affects most of us.

There are obviously degrees of this misfortune mostly dependant on the time you're stuck and who is in there with you.

For former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting, unfortunately his lift experience is on the upper end of the scale.

On New Year's Eve Ponting was covering a Big Bash game in Adelaide and afterwards was having a few quiet beers with his Channel 7 colleagues downstairs at the InterContinental Hotel.

Despite the festive occasion, he decided to make an early cut and headed to his room.

As you can imagine it was a busy night in the hotel so there were plenty of other punters in the lift which Ponting got into on the bottom floor.

And that's when the trouble started.

The lift had barely taken off before it ground to a halt. Ponting and his new friends were stuck.

Thirty minutes later they were still there but there had been some interesting developments inside the lift.

A woman had made it known she desperately needed to go to the toilet. As the minutes ticked by she then explained further, she needed to do number twos.

We're told it go to the point where plans were being put in place for her to do her business with Ponting courageously coming to her aid.

He had his briefcase with him from which he pulled out a plastic folder which was going to play a crucial part in solving the dilemma.

Then as everyone was getting in readiness, the lift doors opened and the poor woman sprinted away leaving a relieved Ponting with an unforgettable story to tell about his New Year's Eve.

Carlton may have missed out this time on snaring Sydney's Tom Papley but as you can see they haven't given up the chase.

Papley and Blues skipper Patrick Cripps seemed very happy to be mingling in the same company at the races over the weekend.

The Swans goalsneak asked for a trade to Carlton at the end of last season but Sydney stood firm given he was contracted until 2023.

One of the funnier moments from Monday's night's Australian Cricket Awards came just before the announcement of the Belinda Clark Award.

As the suspense was being built for the reveal of the best women's cricketer of the year, the Channel 7 camera panned to the contenders.

Ellyse Perry was first, Alyssa Healy next … or she was supposed to be. Instead the camera shot was of an empty seat and a bemused look on the face of her husband Mitch Starc.

Healy wasn't in the ballroom and the joke on the night was that she was in the toilet. However, the Australian keeper yesterday took to Twitter to correct that story.

She was actually still doing an interview outside after winning the One Day International Player of the Year award.

Healy wrote: "Ps just to clarify...... I wasn’t on the loo – @JollyLauz18 was chewing my ear off out the back!!"

THE WHISPER

As we know Shane Warne likes to do things in style. We hear the Test great was less than pleased with the accommodation his employer had come up with for the Sydney Test and instead dipped into his own pocket for more luxurious digs elsewhere.
