The Sydney Swans are propping up the rest when it comes to final quarter fade-outs as the season approaches the halfway stage.

John Longmire’s men watched victory slip away in the final stages of last Friday’s clash with Collingwood at the SCG and a new study points to the Swans paying the price for not finishing with a wet sail often enough.

According to statistics produced by SEN 1116 yesterday, the red and whites are dead last on the ladder when it comes to final quarter battles.

On just three occasions in their first 10 games have the Swans outscored their opponents in the fourth quarter, scoring 158 points and conceding 212.

The second quarter is the club’s strength so far, with 244 points scored and 212 conceded.

Unsurprisingly, Saturday’s opponents Geelong fare much better. They are ranked second for first quarter dominance, first in the second quarter, fourth in the third and second in the final quarter.

The big positive for the Swans this weekend though is that they travel to a venue that has proved a happy hunting ground in recent seasons.

Longmire’s men have recorded victories on their last three visits to Geelong, the most recent being a 12.14 (86) to 10.9 (69) win in round six last season.

Defender Lewis Melican told Swans TV: “We’ve had some really good results down there, some big wins.

“They pride themselves on playing good footy at home so to be able to get a couple of wins over them has been great, and hopefully we’ll be able to get another win on the weekend.”

The Swans will name their side later today with forward Dan Menzel pushing hard for his first outing in the red and white guernsey, a clash which would pit him against his former club.

Across town, the GWS Giants tend to fire in the third quarter _ topping the competition with eight triumphs in their 10 games so far according to the statistics.
