AFL teams Round 20: See all the ins and outs for this week’s games

Liam Jones has withdrew from Carlton’s line-up after a death in the family, while Coleman Medal leader Jeremy Cameron is the latest casualty for the Sydney derby. SEE THE FULL SQUADS.

Carlton defender Liam Jones has withdrew from Sunday’s match against West Coast after the death of his mother.

The Blues have confirmed Jones had pulled up for “personal reasons”.

Paddy Dow was omitted but the Blues regained Zac Fisher and Hugh Goddard.

Meanwhile, Greater Western Sydney has ruled out Jeremy Cameron from the Sydney derby because of calf tightness.

The fifth-placed Giants had previously ruled out key defender Sam Taylor and forward Daniel Lloyd.

Taking Cameron’s place — although probably not his position, up forward for the Giants Stadium clash — will be debutant defender Connor Idun.

“This time last year, I probably didn’t even think I was going to get drafted. To be here now and debuting in the derby, I’ll be pinching myself tomorrow,” said England-born Idun.

Among the veterans recalled for the game are the Giants’ Brett Deledio and Sydney’s Kieren Jack, with forward Dan Menzel another of the Swans’ inclusions.

The Western Bulldogs have dropped father-son Rhylee West despite the young midfielder kicking a goal in an encouraging debut last week.

Matt Suckling, Josh Schache and Toby McLean return for the Dogs, who have lost Dale Morris and Taylor Duryea to injury.

ADAMS BACK TO BOLSTER PIES

Injury-ravaged Collingwood has received a much-needed talent hit with tough midfielder Taylor Adams headlining the list of ‘ins’ as Nathan Buckley’s team prepares to face Gold Coast on Sunday.

Crow Eddie Betts, Bombers goalkicker Orazio Fantasia, premiership Tigers Josh Caddy and Dan Butler, Eagles skipper Shannon Hurn, Cats Zach Tuohy and Gary Rohan and Port forward Charlie Dixon are among the big names to return in round 20.

Former Blue Bryce Gibbs has also earned a recall for Adelaide as Don Pyke made four changes as he tries to right the ship.

But most interest was on the Pies, who are without star Jordan De Goey and promising youngster Isaac Quaynor for Sunday’s clash with the struggling Gold Coast.

Adams is among six potential inclusions as Collingwood named its 25-man squad to tackle the Suns.

Former Blue Bryce Gibbs has also earned a recall for Adelaide as Don Pyke made four changes as he tries to right the ship.

But most interest was on the Pies, who are without star Jordan De Goey and promising youngster Isaac Quaynor for Sunday’s clash with the struggling Suns.

Adams is among six potential inclusions as Collingwood named its 25-man squad to tackle the Suns.

Adams, who has managed just six matches in a frustrating 2019, has been selected after missing last week’s loss to Richmond with a hamstring niggle.

Levi Greenwood will also return after being named in the starting 18, while Jack Madgen, mid-season draftee John Noble, Rupert Wills and Tyler Brown — whose brother Callum is in the side — are also in the mix.

While key defender Jordan Roughead has concussion battle last week, the odds of veteran Tyson Goldsack playing AFL footy this year seem to have further blown out after he wasn’t included in the extended squad.

Richmond lost Sydney Stack at training yesterday morning to a calf injury, that blow coming on top of captain Trent Cotchin’s hamstring.

Melbourne recalled Braydon Preuss to partner Max Gawn while Jake Melksham is back from his foot injury.

There’s still no Dyson Heppell for Essendon but Fantasia’s return, along with dashing Irishman Conor McKenna, bolsters the Bombers for Saturday’s crucial clash with the Power.

Port has recalled Dixon and chopped ruckman Scott Lycett.

Geelong has recalled Tuohy and Rohan after the pair were managed against Sydney, with veteran Harry Taylor rested for the game against Freo.

The Eagles regain Hurn from his calf injury, while the Lions regain star stopper Harris Andrews for Sunday’s Gabba showdown with the Bulldogs after he served his one-week ban.

SWANS GO SMALL AGAINST GIANTS

Ben Horne reports …

Sydney has made the stunning decision to drop key defender Lewis Melican in the same week Dane Rampe is already missing in action for the GWS derby.

Rampe is one of the best defenders in the competition, but rather than consolidate in that area of the field, the Swans have shown no mercy in also omitting one of their emerging stars, Melican on form.

Melican was pushed forward last week as he struggled against Geelong.

GWS, in response, has delivered a message loud and clear for their cross-town rivals: Welcome to the Land of the Giants.

Instead of reverting back to just one ruckman to combat the severely undermanned Swans, the Giants have doubled down on their strategy to unleash big men Shane Mumford and Dawson Simpson in tandem.

But if Swans coach John Longmire is concerned about the Giants’ talls, it certainly didn’t show in an intriguing team announcement.

As well as Rampe being sidelined and Melican being dropped, fellow tall defender Colin O’Riordan is also out with a groin problem.

All eyes will be on how the Swans ultimately match-up to combat the Giants’ potent tall forward line of Jeremy Cameron, Harry Himmelberg and Jeremy Finlayson.

Sydney have been boosted by the return of young gun Oliver Florent, who was rested last week with a niggle, while off-season signing Dan Menzel has finally broken back into the team along with James Rose and Kieren Jack.

The four new additions are all front half players.

GWS have two injury-forced changes, with Sam Taylor (hamstring) and Daniel Lloyd (calf) scratched.

Brett Deledio and Jake Stein are the two men in — Deledio back after being rested from calf tightness.
