PORT Adelaide skipper Travis Boak’s quest for a frontline midfield role this season has received an early set-back - fronting to training with a metal guard on his right hand.
Boak figured in light drills with his hand significantly strapped and a guard stretching from his wrist to middle fingers. Boak’s hand remains bruised and swollen but the club said there was no fracture.

BIG CALL: IS TRAVIS BOAK IN PORT’S BEST 22?
Boak, 29, hurt his hand fending off a teammate in a training drill last Friday. He trained in discomfort today at Alberton but has not had scans. If the injury does not improve the club said Boak would seek further medical advice.
Boak played 22 games averaging 22 touches predominantly across half forward last season.
The arrival of Tom Rockliff and Jack Watts will provide coach Ken Hinkley with frontline midfield options alongside Robbie Gray, Ollie Wines, Sam Powell-Pepper, Brad Ebert and Chad Wingard. However Boak’s time in the engine room is likely to be diminished by Port’s gun recruits.
Watts predicted Boak wouldn’t be sidelined from competitive training for long, saying: “I think the mids were doing some extra tackling when it happened.
“The main thing on his mind is not being able to play golf.”
