ZAC Williams hasn’t played a single AFL game all season but looks set to step straight into the shoes of GWS Giants’ key defensive weapon Heath Shaw.
The Sydney-derby elimination final is still a week and a half away, but Williams appears almost certain to make an extraordinary comeback after rupturing his Achilles during the pre-season.
Williams is likely to go up against Swans’ small-forward Tom Papley in one of the match-ups that should decide the Battle of the Bridge showdown at the SCG.

A favourite of inaugural coach Kevin Sheedy, Williams’ defensive presence and athleticism has been sorely missed by the Giants this year.
With only two NEAFL matches under his belt, Williams is set to be backed in by coach Leon Cameron to play a clutch role in the club’s finals hopes.
Shaw was back around Giants training on Wednesday, on crutches after suffering a season-ending knee injury, sledging teammates at their open media session in customary fashion.
Williams might not possess the verbal aggression to match experienced head Shaw in defence, but it’s hoped the 23-year-old’s energy can bring a tired Giants outfit back to life.
“Unfortunately with the injury to Heath Shaw I’ll put my hand up to come in and take his spot but ultimately I’m just ready to go and ready to play some footy,” said Williams.
“(Shaw) just walked past before and told me I have some big shoes to fill.
“Shawy is a great character around the club and he’s one of my mentors so I’ll be picking his brain for sure.”
Many thought Williams would be wiped for 2018 the moment he did his Achilles, but the rising star from the outset made clear to the playing group his desire to play again.
After two matches in reserves, Williams is adamant he has no self-doubt going into a massive final.
“Not so much with the Achilles. The last two weeks being back playing I’ve had some knocks and little bruises but I’m not even worried about my Achilles anymore,” he said.
“Obviously I’ve had a mini pre-season and got myself right to play the last two weeks, so I have full confidence that if I come back into play against the Swanies I’ll be right to go.
“I know I can play at the level I need to. I’m feeling really good and ready to go.”
Williams believes his combination with fellow defender Lachie Whitfield will shine through immediately.
