Jeremy Cameron launches to Coleman Medal with nine goals in thumping win over Gold Coast

Jeremy Cameron benefited from the selflessness of his GWS Giants teammates, bagging nine goals against Gold Coast on Saturday to claim this year’s Coleman Medal.

Jeremy Cameron has made history as the first Greater Western Sydney player to claim the Coleman Medal after booting seven second-half goals in the Giants’ demolition of Gold Coast on Saturday.

The GWS spearhead started the clash six goals behind North Melbourne’s Ben Brown, who finished the home-and-away season with 64 majors.

Cameron had closed the gap to four by halftime before launching to within one of Brown with three goals in as many minutes during the third term.

The 26-year-old missed two opportunities to draw level before bagging his sixth and was confirmed as the Coleman medallist by three-quarter-time.

“I thought I had cost myself there a couple of times,” he said on Fox Footy.

“I missed a couple of easy ones.”

Cameron iced a 150th game to remember with two goals in the last quarter, missing a set shot at the 29-minute mark with double figures begging.

“We didn’t really want to come into the game with that mindset (of feeding Cameron),” he said.

“We have had two really rough weeks in the lead up to this and we had to really focus on the win.

“It’s really good to hit back and now we can throw the legs up for a couple of days and then get stuck into the real stuff.”

The Giants were desperate to ensure Cameron earned the accolade, with teammates Harry Perryman and Josh Kelly choosing to pass with the goals at their mercy.

“The boys were awesome tonight,” Cameron said on Fox Footy.

“If you go behind the goals and have a look at the amount of work they did to block and get me out tonight was outstanding.

“I’ve never played with such a selfless group like we have at the moment.”

Cameron’s haul could have been even more impressive as he finished with 9.5 from 19 disposals and took 12 marks.

GWS stormed clear of Gold Coast in the second half at Metricon Stadium to secure an emphatic 20.7 (127) to 7.13 (55) victory.
