Adam Kennedy’s dad has missed just one game as his son prepares for his 100th milestone

Adam Kennedy’s dad vowed to watch every every game his son played, missing just one, and he certainly will be there to witness his son’s milestone 100th game.

Umpires miss critical call after the siren

A family wedding is the only “blemish” on Tony Kennedy’s own proud record as he prepares to witness his son’s milestone 100th game on Sunday.

Adam Kennedy hits the magic ton as the high-flying Giants tackle Hawthorn at the MCG.

Dad clocks up game number 99 watching Adam, agonisingly short of the full set.

Mum, Kaye, isn’t far behind. She’s seen all but three of her son’s games for the men in orange and charcoal.

“It was my niece’s wedding about three years ago, the one game I missed,” Tony tells The Sunday Telegraph.

“I think they were playing North Melbourne in Tasmania.

“When the wedding invitation arrived, I said to my wife ‘let me know what the wedding’s like, won’t you…’

“She made it clear where I’d be that day and, well, guess who won.

“Fortunately the wedding was a bit later in the day so I got to see the first half on TV and heard the result later. But, no, it was a lovely day.”

Tony’s incredible attendance record is no coincidence.

From the moment Adam played his first game for the Giants, dad, not knowing how long the journey would last, vowed to see every moment.

“We’re so proud that he’s doing what he set out to achieve,” Tony said.

“It wasn’t given to him on a silver platter and he’s had his disappointments as well (including a serious knee injury back in 2017). So we’ll all be there today. His grandmother will be there too. Hopefully they can get a win for him. That will top the day right off.”

The milestone man himself cannot wait.

Thankfully, a week of concussion tests ended with the green light to go.

And having signed a contract extension back in April that takes him through to 2022, he’s happy to be a Giant for life.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’d been thinking about it (the milestone) as it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride so far,” he said.

“It’s pretty exciting to play my 100th.”

And as for how it all started back in 2011?

“I pretty much had a nightmare first day,” Adam said.

“I went in and didn’t really understand what it takes, a general day for an AFL footballer. I got through about 30 per cent of training pretty much spewing my guts up and then they threw me out then.

“I pretty much had bags packed ready to go, not knowing there’s an afternoon rotation, weights and meetings.

“Those first two years we were getting pantsed every game and it wasn’t easy. I feel like that built a lot of resilience for myself and those boys that played then. But all the hard work, it’s worth it.

“I’m backing myself more and more as the years go on.”

And while he continues to back himself, he can rest assured the backing from much-travelled mum and dad in the stands remains a given.
