AFL 25: Scott Gullan names Geelong’s team of the century so far

You’d do well to find a better line-up over the past 25 years than what Geelong can roll out. With All-Australians everywhere, SCOTT GULLAN picks out their best side of a dominant era.

AFL 25 | Team of the Century (so far)

You’re going to do well to find a better line-up over the past 25 years than what Geelong can roll out.

Every player in the team - repeat EVERY - has earned an All-Australian jumper during their career.

It must be said the dominant 2007 Cats premiership team were certainly looked on favourably by the AA selectors with a record nine making the team - Gary Ablett, Jimmy Bartel, Joel Corey, Matthew Egan, Steve Johnson, Cameron Ling, Darren Milburn, Cameron Mooney and Matthew Scarlett.

Two of those, Egan and Mooney, don’t make the cut for this team.

The unluckiest player to miss is Mitch Duncan who has been consistently good for a long time and played in two flags but he lost out to Steven King as the back-up ruckman and his current teammate Cam Guthrie who has won two best fairests, one in a premiership year.

King was the dominant big man in the game in the early 2000s, captaining the club, winning multiple best and fairests and a flag.

Another player who is a bit stiff is Peter Riccardi, the graceful left-foot wingman who played 288 excellent games for the Cats but his best years were more in the late 90s’ where he won the best and fairest in 1998.

Tyson Stengle’s extraordinary career resurrection which includes All-Australian selection and a premiership was enough to get him the nod in the forward pocket over one of the club’s most favourite warriors Mathew Stokes who was an integral part of the Cats golden era.
