Forward Cam McCarthy has quit Fremantle after being told he would not be offered a contract for next season.
The Dockers said in a statement McCarthy had been granted an early release from his contract, which was to expire at the end of the 2020 campaign.
“The club, Cam and his management have mutually agreed that Cam be released from his AFL playing contract for 2020,” general manager football Peter Bell said.
“We have been in discussions with Cam and his management about his future at Fremantle.
“We believed it was only fair to advise Cam as soon as possible that it was unlikely that he would have his contract extended beyond the end of the 2020 season.”
The Dockers said after discussing the situation with his management and family, McCarthy sought an early release from his contract.
McCarthy, who started his AFL career at GWS Giants, has not played since Round 1.

The former Giant has endured a difficult season, diagnosed with epilepsy in June after collapsing at training.
He played 49 games for the Dockers, kicking 63 goals.
McCarthy reportedly is keen to continue his AFL career at a third club in 2021 and could also end up in the WAFL.
The goalkicker was traded to Fremantle after the 2016 season, along with draft pick 7, in return for pick 3. After another swap with Brisbane the Giants snared Tim Taranto, while the Dockers used pick 7 on defender Griffin Logue.
“Cam is very popular with our members and supporters, and on behalf of everyone at the club, we thank him for the contribution he made during his four seasons at Fremantle,” Bell said.
“We also wish Cam all the very best for his future endeavours and the next stage of his career.”
At this stage, Cam McCarthy is not joining the @freodockers in Cairns. Both sides working on a mutual compromise for a parting of ways. No contract for next season, but McCarthyâs very keen to continue his football career.
