ESSENDON veteran James Kelly has revealed he almost missed the start of today’s game against Geelong.
The former Cat arrived at Etihad Stadium just before 3pm — about half an hour before the first bounce.
The 289-game midfielder missed a scheduled pre-match interview and only had a few minutes to warm up after running through the banner before taking his place on the field.

And the reason for the delay was something many fans can relate to.
“(There was a) bit of traffic on the West Gate (Freeway),” he said on 3AW radio after the game.
“I was that dirty and my wife was in the front seat next to me and somehow I made it her fault.
“My pits were that sweaty trying to run here to get here on time, but I didn’t make it (for the interview) so I do apologise.
“I just got here and (went) straight in the meeting.”
The lack of preparation apparently wasn’t a handicap as Kelly kicked the first score of the game (a behind at the four-minute mark) and had 19 disposals in the first half before finishing with 26, more than any other Essendon player.
But he really should have known better. This was his 67th AFL match at Docklands.
