BANNED Bomber Brent Stanton will return to Essendon in 2017. The 30-year old has agreed to a one-year contract.

Stanton joins Tom Bellchambers, Dyson Heppell, David Myers, Cale Hooker, Travis Colyer and Heath Hocking as the seventh Bomber to recommit to Essendon.

The Bombers are now only waiting on the signatures of Jobe Watson, Michael Hurley, Michael Hibberd, Tayte Pears and Ben Howlett.

Stanton said the football program John Worsfold has established at the club fills him with confidence.

“I took the time I needed to make sure I made the right decision for myself, my family and the footy club, and I’m really excited about playing on next season,” Stanton said.

“Being a one club player with Essendon is something that is really important to me. Witnessing the spirit and performance from the boys this season, and also our loyal members and supporters, gives me great confidence in the direction of the football club.

“As a senior player it’s great to see Woosha’s drive and ambition. The structure, culture and vision he’s established at the football Club will help us become a really competitive team and hopefully build success for everyone involved with the Essendon Football Club.”

Essendon chief executive officer, Xavier Campbell said Stanton’s commitment was a great show of faith for the future of the club.

“Brent is a fantastic club person and I know his decision to return for the 2017 season will be well received by our members and supporters, but in particular by his team mates who have great respect for him,” Campbell said.

Of the players not yet re-signed at the Bombers, Hurley is creating the most interest.

The Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne are two clubs keen to lure the All-Australian defender out of TrueValue Solar Centre during this year’s trading period.

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson officially entered the Saints in the Hurley race on Monday.

Richardson said the Saints were always looking to add quality players but Hurley had to tick some boxes before he was pursued.

“We’re in the market for good players and he (Hurley) certainly fits that criteria,” he told 3AW on Monday.

“There’s a lot that goes into those selections. What do you give up to get anyone? Are they are really specific need for your footy club? Do they fit the right demographic?

“We’ll make decisions on our list ... he’s a good player and were always looking to add quality to many positions our list and we’ll be active in that space.”
More to come.
