CARLTON ruckman Matthew Kreuzer will face a series of heart tests this week after becoming the second Carlton player in as many weeks to be ruled out of a match due to an elevated heart rate.

Speaking after the Blues’ 64-point loss to St Kilda, coach Brendon Bolton was at a loss to explain what happened to Kreuzer.

Kreuzer experienced shortness of breath during the opening minutes of the match, and was found to have an elevated heart reading when he was off the ground, the same thing that happened to Caleb Marchbank against Brisbane a week earlier.

He was ruled out of the game as a result, leaving the Blues a rotation down for the majority of the game.

There were initial fears the luckless Blues ruckman would have to be rushed to hospital after paramedics were called down into the rooms.

“He had shortness of breath and quite randomly — you wouldn’t believe it — an elevated heart rate,” Bolton said.

“It settled down pretty quickly, but we didn’t want to take any chances.

“We will go through the test with the cardiologists (this week).

“I haven’t see it (happen before) and I haven’t see it two weeks in a row.”

Marchbank underwent tests with a cardiologist after his episode last week, but was passed fit to play last night against the Saints.

Bolton hopes the same will happen with Kreuzer ahead of next Sunday’s clash with Hawthorn, but stressed the club won’t take any risks.

Bolton said that he had “no idea” why there had been several instances of AFL players having elevated heart readings this season.

Meanwhile, Carlton’s Jed Lamb could face match review scrutiny after he scuffled with Jade Gresham, with one of his hands appearing to come close to the Saint’s eyes during the second term.

Meanwhile, Jed Lamb could face MRO scrutiny after he appeared to either eye gouge or ‘fishhook’ Saint Jade Gresham during a scuffle early in the second term.

He could face a fine if charged with making unnecessary contact to the face (misconduct). If it was deemed a serious misconduct charge, Lamb would be referred straight to the tribunal.
