Carlton’s attempt to snare Sydney recruiting boss Kinnear Beatson has hit a roadblock

Carlton’s hunt for a Stephen Silvagni replacement has hit an early snag, with the Blues missing out on a highly respected list boss from a rival club. Where does this leave the club?

Highly-respected list manager Kinnear Beatson will extend his contract at Sydney, thwarting Carlton’s hopes of poaching the Swans’ talent expert.

Beatson has been continually linked to a move to Carlton in the wake of the Blues’ controversial call to part ways with list boss Stephen Silvagni this month.

Silvagni is set to take some time off after a five-year stint rebuilding Carlton’s list.

But Beatson will not be the man to replace Silvagni at Ikon Park after recent talks with the Swans about an early contract extension.

The veteran recruiter was already contracted at Sydney for 2020 but is poised to recommit in the new year, locking him at the Swans beyond next season.

It is a major boost for Sydney as Beatson’s draft and trade expertise helped keep the Swans in the finals for nine straight years between 2010 and 2018, including the 2012 premiership.

Before that, he helped piece together Brisbane’s legendary triple-premiership 2001-2004 team.

At Sydney, he will again oversee the club’s attempts to launch another bid to poach Essendon free agent Joe Daniher next season.

The Swans did not want to part with pick No. 5 in this year’s trade period for Daniher and instead swooped on South Australian outside midfielder Dylan Stephens in the draft.

Carlton will take its time to assess other replacement options for Silvagni to head up its list division as it attempts to climb up the ladder from next season.

Fremantle’s national recruiting manager David Walls has also been linked to the Carlton vacancy but is in-line for a promotion to stay with the Dockers.

Carlton’s new list chief will take charge of the Blues’ recruiting strategy including its moves to try and secure Sydney hard nut Tom Papley after missing out this year.

Papley wanted to come to Carlton but was held to his contract up north.
