Carlton names Nick Austin as new list manager, replacing Stephen Silvagni

Carlton list boss Stephen Silvagni left the club in controversial circumstances last December. Now the Blues have named the son of a club champion as their new list boss.

Carlton has appointed the son of club great to become its new list boss as part of a revamp of its recruiting department.

The Blues have announced Western Bulldogs’ recruiting manager Nick Austin, the son of Carlton 220-game premiership player Rod Austin, will help take over from departed list boss Stephen Silvagni.

Nick Austin has worked at the kennel for the past two years after previous stints in list management at Richmond and opposition analysis at Port Adelaide.

It means the Blues have struck back at the Western Bulldogs after they poached list manager Sam Power from the Blues two years ago.

Austin said the new job was a “fantastic opportunity”.

“This playing group is entering an exciting stage. There is some real talent here for Carlton fans to be excited about and as a recruiting team we will constantly look to add to that talent and bring quality players to Ikon Park.”

At Carlton, Austin will join forces with current list manager Mick Agresta and national recruiting manager Paul Brodie.

But there will be a restructure of the division so Agresta can focus more on the club’s trade period moves and Brodie will remain in charge of the draft analysis.

Carlton football boss Brad Lloyd also has a lot of experience in list management after filling that position at Fremantle.

Lloyd said Austin knew “what it takes to build a premiership list”.

“In his recent role at the Bulldogs, Nick’s key focus was on the draft and his extensive skillset will be invaluable in heading up our recruiting department,” he said.

The Blues controversially cut ties with Silvagni after the draft last year because his two sons Jack and Ben were on the list, compromising his role.

The club is expected to confirm the appointment this week.
