Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan expects Brendon Bolton will resurface at another club after Carlton sacking

It won’t be at Brisbane, where there are no coaching vacancies, but Chris Fagan says he expects sacked Carlton coach Brendon Bolton will land at another AFL club soon.

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has given a powerful endorsement of Brendon Bolton’s attributes as a coach but was less convincing when quizzed if he’d approached his former colleague to join the Lions.

The former Blues coach has been linked to the Lions but CEO Greg Swann and Fagan have both insisted they had not spoken to Bolton about adding to Brisbane’s coaching ranks for 2019.

However, Fagan did not completely rule it out.

“We don’t have any vacancies at our club at the moment,’’ he said.

“That is a reasonable thing to point at me, but he has also worked with a lot of other people at the Hawthorn football club who all know his talents.

“So I am sure somebody out there will be thinking seriously about that.’’

The Lions take on Bolton’s former club at Marvel Stadium on Saturday and Fagan admits he must prepare his side for the unpredictable nature of performances from sides who have just seen their coach sacked.

“The other thing is, as we always do, is we respect our opposition,” he said.

“And we’d have no reason not to respect Carlton their performances this year have been really strong other than a couple of games.

“They led Collingwood half way through the last quarter, they beat the Bulldogs and pushed Hawthorn to five points down in Tassie, so on their day they are a very good side.’’

Fagan has been in contact with Bolton but says it was in his capacity as an old friend.

He says he is convinced Bolton has a lot to offer any club in the competition.

“We go a long way back I coached him when he was a 16-year-old,’’ he said.

“I was disappointed for him and his family at what happened earlier in the week, I think he has done a terrific job at Carlton I think they are a team really on the improve.

“It is just a pity he hasn’t got the opportunity to see it through but he is a resilient person and he is a great footy person and someone will snap him up, maybe not in a senior coaching role but in an assistant coaching role and he would be a great get for their club.’’

Ben Keays has been omitted.

Gold Coast have finally received some injury relief for their match with the Kangaroos at Metricon Stadium with senior players Touk Miller and Jarrod Harbrow both named to play.

Inside midfielder Will Brodie also comes into the side as a replacement for Jack Bowes who is out for two months.

Josh Schoenfeld and George Horlin-Smith are also out of the side.
