AFL Round 13: All the teams for this weekend’s matches as they drop

Mason Cox will miss Monday’s Queen’s Birthday clash for the Pies, as Melbourne made just one change to their dominant squad. Check out the line-ups.

Pure Footy – Episode 12

Collingwood forward Mason Cox has failed to win a spot in the starting 22 for Monday’s Queen’s Birthday clash against Melbourne, with the Pies making just two changes for the match at the SCG.

Cox had been named as part of an extended bench on Thursday night for what would have been his first AFL game since Round 4.

However, the 211cm American has instead been named as one of four emergencies alongside Callum Brown, Jay Rantall and Tom Wilson.

The Magpies’ medical substitute will be picked from those four players.

Veteran Chris Mayne and forward Beau McCreery return for the Magpies, replacing Brayden Sier (jaw) and omitted pair Rantall and Brown.

An in-form Melbourne has made just one change, with wingman Ed Langdon returning from concussion to replace forward Jake Melksham.

Melksham has been named as an emergency alongside last week’s medical substitute Oskar Baker, Kade Chandler and Mitch Brown.

Tigers play it safe with injury-prone onballer

Richmond midfielder Dion Prestia will miss Sunday’s blockbuster clash with West Coast after failing to prove his fitness on Friday following a minor hamstring complaint.

Prestia was named in the Tigers’ initial squad on Thursday night for the clash at Perth Stadium, but Richmond has decided to take a cautious approach with the injury-prone onballer heading into a bye next week.

Defender Rhyan Masell has been brought into the Tigers squad and named as an emergency alongside Will Martyn, Hugo Ralphsmith and the yet-to-debut Ben Miller.

The Eagles have made four changes for the match, with Liam Duggan, Josh Kennedy, Oscar Allen and Jamaine Jones all named in the starting 22.

North Melbourne defender Robbie Tarrant will play his first game of the year against Greater Western Sydney on Sunday after overcoming a serious kidney issue.

Forward Jaidyn Stephenson and ruckman Tristan Xerri have also been included in the starting 22 for the Kangaroos after being named on the extended bench.

Toby Greene (shoulder) and Matt de Boer (hamstring) return from injury for the Giants.

Dimma calls for AFL to expand free agency window

Triple premiership coach Damien Hardwick says an injury scare to one of his brightest prospects has only strengthened his desire for the AFL to allow clubs to add players to their lists until finals.

Hardwick is a proponent of a more liberal player transfer market that would include a mid-season trade period and an open delisted free agency market.

Richmond youngster Bigoa “Biggie’’ Nyuon’s knee crumpled on the weekend with an injury the club believed was an ACL but was only later diagnosed as a one-week PCL sprain.

360 VIEW: RALPHY ON WHY THE AFL NEEDS MID-SEASON TRADES

The Tigers thought long and hard about taking ex-Collingwood midfielder Nathan Freeman in the mid-season draft and instead went for ex-Saint Matt Parker.

Hardwick said it only reinforced to him that players like Freeman were shut-out of AFL by arbitrary timelines like the mid-season draft.

“Absolutely, I think it has to come in,” he said of an unrestricted delisted free agency window.

“We had a slight scare on the weekend, one of our talls, Biggy Nyuon, we thought he did his ACL and we thought straight away we had a guy like Nathan Freeman could have quite easily picked up, anything that gives players the opportunity to play our great game should be looked at. And I think the AFL in general will look at it also. It creates a great conversation piece for our game, for journalists, for our game.

“The more we open up the player movement system can only be a good thing for our game

“I am not sure why we put on time frames, the reality is you should be able to move players until a certain point and then it shuts down and then the finals come into it.

“Anything that provides players an opportunity to play at the highest level, we have got some players frustrated at not getting games, anything that gives them opp to play clubs will look at. Eventually it will come around, sooner rather than later would be better from my point of view.”
