Taylor Walker has backed Darcy Fogarty to cement his spot in Adelaide’s best 22 this season, saying the young key forward has an understanding of footy beyond his years.

Despite only 14 AFL games under his belt, Fogarty has become a cult figure among Crows fans, particularly after booting five goals without a miss against West Coast last season.

The 20-year-old raging bull told The Advertiser in December he had slashed six seconds off his 2km time trial and shed 2kg in a bid to finally secure a regular spot in the Crows’ senior side this year.

He has also worked with Walker, and the former Crows captain said he looked forward to partnering with “The Fog” in a new look Adelaide attack – even though he sometimes has to get a bit stern with Fogarty.

“I’m looking forward to it, he’s had an awesome pre-season and hopefully we can get some more games out of him this season, the big fella,” he said.

“He is a bit of a larrikin, Fog, sometimes you just have to say ‘I’m talking to you’.

“But he’s a good kid, he’s a ripper, he understands the game and for a kid who has only been in the system for a couple of years his knowledge of the game is going to get better and better.”

The partnership could be on show at Noarlunga this Friday when Walker has his first hitout for the Crows this season in their second Marsh Community Series game against Gold Coast.

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks told the club’s Members’ Meeting that the Crows would play 22 players against the Suns and Walker said there would be some unlucky players missing out.

“We will go in with quite a strong team,” he said.

“(There’s) pressure for spots and there will be some guys who will be a bit unlucky to miss.”

After playing for the All Stars in the State of Origin game, Walker was back at Thebarton Oval watching the Under 23 trial game between the Crows and Pordarcy fogarty t Adelaide.

He said the club’s youngsters had really impressed, as had former Collingwood recruit Ben Crocker.

“His competitiveness is outstanding,” Walker said.

“I played against him and saw him play for Collingwood, he’s very impressive, he is an elite runner.”

Nicks has confirmed No. 6 pick Fischer McAsey will play against the Suns, saying the utility had not put a foot wrong since coming to the club last year.
