SuperCoach rich list: The most expensive player at your club

The Western Bulldogs are this year’s SuperCoach rich kids but the Tigers like to spread the wealth around. See where your team ranks and the most expensive players at every club.

SuperCoach steals

The battlers from the western suburbs are now the rich kids of SuperCoach.

Fans rattled tins to save the Western Bulldogs 30 years ago but you would need to sell a lot of bumper stickers to pay for the stars in Luke Beveridge’s side in Australia’s biggest fantasy game, which opens for 2020 on Tuesday.

If you want to pick all of Jack Macrae, Josh Dunkley and Marcus Bontempelli it will set you back more than $1.9 million of a $10 million salary cap.

In total, Bulldogs players add up to $14,697,400 — edging out the “Bondi billionaires” at GWS as the highest value team.

SuperCoach scoring is based on a unique formula developed by Champion Data that rewards stats tied to winning matches — contested possessions, intercept marks, effective disposals and goals all score well, while players lose points for turnovers.

Surprisingly, premier Richmond has the second-lowest team value in the competition, a reflection of the Tigers’ team-first approach, while .

TOP-PRICED PLAYER AT EVERY TEAM

ADELAIDE

Matt Crouch $563,000 MID

The younger Crouch brother frustrated plenty of SuperCoach players last year but he starts 2020 as the most expensive Crow — although the fact he’s well under the $600k mark is a sign of how far Adelaide fell away last season. In fact, the Crows overall have the lowest combined value of any side. Regular SuperCoach top-liners Rory Sloane ($559,300 MID) and Rory Laird ($525,800 DEF) are underpriced if they can return to their best.

Cheapest players: Lachlan Gollant $117,300 DEF/MID, Josh Worrell $117,300 DEF/FWD, Ronin O’Connor $117,300 MID, Harry Schoenberg $117,300 MID

BRISBANE LIONS

Lachie Neale $658,500 MID

Neale is the fourth-most expensive player in the comp and the second top-priced midfielder behind Bulldog Jack Macrae. He has always been a SuperCoach star but took his game to a new level last season, averaging 121 points. Taggers set their sights on him in the second half of the year — expect him to get more close attention in 2020.

Cheapest player: Corey Lyons $102,400 MID

CARLTON

Patrick Cripps $635,900 MID

It’s Cripps then daylight at the Blues, with the co-captain more than $100,000 pricier than Carlton’s next most-expensive player, ruckman Matthew Kreuzer. Defender Nic Newman ($524,800) is the only other Blue above $500k although we’re tipping Sam Walsh ($471,900) and Sam Docherty ($436,100) will be there before long.

Cheapest player: Fraser Phillips $105,500 FWD

COLLINGWOOD

Brodie Grundy $705,900 RUCK

Grundy is the most expensive player in the game for the second year in a row. He’s the only player over $700k but is $2300 cheaper than this time last year — bargain alert! The Magpies are placed third for overall team value, with Adam Treloar ($615,800) the 12th most-expensive player in the game. Scott Pendlebury, Taylor Adams and Steele Sidebottom are all over $500k.

Cheapest player: Thomas Wilson $102,400 FWD

ESSENDON

Zach Merrett $573,600 MID

Merrett is the fourth-cheapest of the players on this list and there are only two other Bombers priced above $500k — Dylan Shiel ($529,100) and Dyson Heppell ($514,300), highlighting a lack of star power at Windy Hill. They will be hoping young stars Darcy Parish ($465,400) and Andrew McGrath ($399,400) are in that category by this time next year.

Cheapest player: Ross McQuillan $102,400 DEF/MID

FREMANTLE

Nat Fyfe $651,500 MID

Fyfe is an established member of the SuperCoach pantheon, averaging at least 100 points a game for the past seven seasons. Last year’s average of 120 was enough to make him the fifth most-expensive player entering 2020. Apart from that it’s pretty barren out west, with Michael Walters ($547,200 FWD/MID) and Luke Ryan ($520,400 DEF) the only other Dockers priced over $500k — and four bottom-priced rookies.

Cheapest players: Leno Thomas $102,400 DEF, Tom North $102,400 MID, Isaiah Butters $102,400 FWD

GEELONG

Patrick Dangerfield $625,000 MID

Dangerfield comes in at a surprising No.10 on the overall rich list after averaging 115 points a game last year — his lowest figure in five years. This year he’s also only available as a midfielder, but can you afford to leave him out? Chronically overlooked gun Mitch Duncan ($560,600 MID) is the second priciest Cat ahead of defender Tom Stewart ($533,200). Gary Ablett ($519,500 FWD) is priced above $500k for the 14th straight season.

Cheapest player: Oscar Brownless $102,400 FWD

GOLD COAST

Jarrod Witts $541,300 RUCK

Not many swanning around with fat cigars on the Gold Coast, with Witts the only Sun priced above $500k. The Suns do, however, have a large stockpile of high draft picks who are valued higher than most first-year players; No.1 draft pick Matt Rowell has a $207,300 price tag for his first season.

Cheapest player: Patrick Murtagh $102,400 FWD, Malcolm Rosas $102,400 FWD, Luke Towey $102,400 DEF, Matthew Conroy $102,400 RUCK

GWS GIANTS

Josh Kelly $637,700 MID

The Rolls Royce of the AFL is the sixth most-expensive player overall after averaging 117 points a game last year. And there are plenty more luxury cars in Leon Cameron’s garage. Lachie Whitfield ($604,100 FWD/MID) is the most expensive forward, four more midfielders come in over $500k — Tim Taranto, Stephen Coniglio, Jacob Hopper and a discounted

Callan Ward — plus forwards Toby Greene and Jeremy Cameron. Get the wallet out!

Cheapest players: Jake Riccardi $117,300 FWD, Tom Hutchesson $117,300 MID/FWD

HAWTHORN

Tom Mitchell $630,900 MID

Mitchell hasn't played in more than a year but he’s still the priciest Hawk, and by a big margin. Mitchell averaged 129 points a game in 2018, which makes that price great value if he can return to his best. James Worpel ($527,100 MID) is No.2 at Waverley with a bullet. Defender James Sicily and dependable ruckman Ben McEvoy also top the $500k mark; “big boy” would be in a lot more teams if it wasn’t for Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn — keep him in mind for SuperCoach Draft.

Cheapest player: Harrison Pepper $102,400 DEF

MELBOURNE

Max Gawn $697,100 RUCK

Gawn is the second-most expensive player in the game, behind only ruck rival Brodie Grundy. Last year he started the season valued at $692,100 and some strategic players held off hoping for a price fall, only to find he was worth $725,000 by Round 16 — food for thought this year. Midfielders Clayton Oliver ($539,600) and James Harmes ($516,400) are the only other Demons over $500k.

Cheapest player: Trent Rivers $117,300 DEF/MID

NORTH MELBOURNE

Todd Goldstein $609,400 RUCK

They’re a blue collar mob at the Roos, with few players on big coin. Goldstein is the clear exception — he’s the 13th most-expensive player in SuperCoach after posting an average of 112 last season. In a hot streak from Rounds 15-22 he averaged 135.5, which puts him in Grundy/Gawn territory.

Cheapest player: Matthew McGuinness $102,400 DEF

PORT ADELAIDE

Travis Boak $582,300 MID

Former skipper Boak elevates himself into the elite bracket after a career year in 2019, averaging 107 points a game as a forward. Sadly for us he’s only available as a midfielder in 2020. Scott Lycett ($550,600 RUCK) is the second priciest Port player but it will be hard to pick him as well after he also lost dual-position status. Robbie Gray could be a bargain at $453,000.

Cheapest players: Riley Grundy $102,400 DEF, Trent Burgoyne $102,400 FWD, Boyd Woodcock $102,400 FWD

RICHMOND

Bachar Houli $571,600 DEF

The premier doesn’t have a player in the top 20 on the SuperCoach rich list and is ranked 17th for overall team value — an illustration of a very even team and the fact most of the “big four” missed sizeable portions of 2019 with injury. Houli, 31, is the No.1 Tiger after averaging 105 points a game. Dustin Martin is surprisingly affordable at $543,000, and he can be picked as a forward. Lock him in now!

Cheapest players: Noah Cumberland $117,300 MID/FWD, Bigoa Nyuon $117,300 DEF/RUCK, Hugo Ralphsmith $117,300 MID/FWD, Will Martyn $117,300 MID

ST KILDA

Rowan Marshall $598,700 RUCK

One of the revelations of 2019 has had a whopping $257,600 added to his price tag for 2020 after a breakout season in which he averaged 110 points a game. He doesn’t present anywhere near the same value this season and will be sharing the ruck with Paddy Ryder. Overall, the Saints are ranked fifth for team value — no excuses, Ratts!

Cheapest players: Ryan Byrnes $117,300 MID, Ryan Byrnes $117,300 MID

SYDNEY

Jake Lloyd $591,400 DEF

Lloyd has been a SuperCoach gun for the past two seasons, but the Swans’ overall 13th team value ranking is a big change from the glory days of a few years ago when Sydney’s stars filled our fantasy teams. Surely this is the year Isaac Heeney rises to premium status.

Cheapest player: Barry O’Connor $102,400 DEF/FWD

WEST COAST

Elliot Yeo $584,400 MID

It’s a tight race at the Eagles, with Yeo edging out Andrew Gaff by just $1200. Ex-skipper Shannon Hurn ($562,200 DEF) isn’t far behind, while boom recruit Tim Kelly will set you back $561,800. Overall West Coast ranks mid-table which is something of a surprise.

Cheapest players: Hamish Brayshaw $102,400 MID, Mitchell O’Neill $102,400

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Jack Macrae $668,900 MID

The Dogs are living it up with three of the 11 most-expensive players in SuperCoach. You probably can’t start all three but there’s no reason not to pick two of Macrae, Josh Dunkley ($632,400) or Marcus Bontempelli ($623,000). They don’t have many bottom-priced rookies, either. No wonder Champion Data rates the Bulldogs’ list so highly.

Cheapest players: Louis Butler $117,300 DEF/MID, Riley Garcia $117,300 MID
