That looked like the winning game plan from Ross Lyon at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, but the truth was a little more nuanced.
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera continued his CBA spike from the week before, attending every centre bounce in the dramatic final quarter.
And once again that was good news for Jack Sinclair, who racked up 32 disposals – including eight kick-ins – and 132 SuperCoach points.
Max Hall was thrown into the centre square in the final term at the expense of Jack Steele, who spent the quarter in the forward line.
Meanwhile, SuperCoach star Jack Macrae has quietly lost his centre bounce time. Over the past two weeks he has attended 45 and 47 per cent of CBAs, well down on his season average of 71 per cent.
Macrae collected 24 disposals and 101 SuperCoach points against Melbourne, after 19 touches and 89 SuperCoach points against Geelong. Watch this space.
AFL coaches are using the final weeks of the season to try something different, with a number of new faces given centre bounce time in round 20.
They included Levi Ashcroft (Brisbane Lions), Caleb Windsor (Melbourne), Taj Hotton (Richmond) and Alex Davies, who filled Touk Miller’s shoes at Gold Coast with 25 CBAs, 30 disposals and 136 SuperCoach points in his first game for 2025.
In one of the most surprising moves of the weekend, Caleb Daniel attended one CBA – his first for the season – for North Melbourne, which tried 11 different players at centre bounces against the Cats.
