SuperCoach AFL 2024: Winners and losers from round 14

A rookie defender has come from the clouds just when SuperCoaches needed him. There’s just one snag. See all the big round 14 winners and losers.

Rookie defenders have been hard to find all year in SuperCoach, but we might have a gem for the rest of the season after a brilliant round 14 debut.

Arie Schoenmaker played his first AFL game on Friday night and looked right at home for the Saints, collecting 18 disposals – hitting the target with 16 of them – six marks and 83 SuperCoach points.

Make him a priority trade-in!

There’s just one hitch ... St Kilda has the bye next week.

So Schoenmaker can’t help get teams to 18 scoring players in the final bye round, but a downgrade to him could free up valuable cash to make other vital moves.

He was one of the big winners in a rollercoaster round 14 – here are all our heroes and villains.

WINNERS

ARIE SCHOENMAKER – 83 POINTS

With Dougal Howard out for a while and Zaine Cordy subbed off with two disposals, the No.62 draft pick should get a lot more opportunities in the Saints line-up ... from round 16 onwards.

JOEL AMARTEY – 182 POINTS

It was a real party for Amartey’s 465 owners as the Swans forward piled on nine goals against the Crows.

MARCUS BONTEMPELLI – 162 POINTS

Thirty disposals, eight marks, three goals. Not bad for a guy who trained away from teammates all week and was in doubt due to illness.

NICK DAICOS – 129 POINTS

Was under the pump in the first half thanks to some close attention from Will Phillips. But Daicos came to life in the second half, inspiring Collingwood’s incredible comeback with 18 disposals after the main break including two goals and two direct assists.

DAN HOUSTON – 174 POINTS

It helps when you take kick-ins and the opposition kicks 9.19, but Houston only took eight of those (playing on from all eight). That leaves another 27 touches he won in open play, with 30 of his 35 disposals hitting the target. It was Houston’s highest score of the season and his second 100-plus score in six weeks, but what a way to do it.

DAYNE ZORKO – 141 POINTS

Is it possible to be underwhelmed by a score like that? Perhaps when Zorko had 99 points to his name at halftime. But the popular vice-captain candidate delivered, as so many half-backs have against the Saints this season.

JAMES SICILY – 147 POINTS

Speaking of defenders taking advantage of friendly match-ups, Sicily owned the Tigers for the second time in as many seasons. The Hawks skipper scored 171 points against Richmond last year, and had another field day on Saturday with 33 disposals and 15 marks.

TOBY NANKERVIS – 131 POINTS

We can’t really promote Nank as a point of difference ruckman with the Tigers on the bye next week, but check out these scores from his past five matches – 105, 127, 117, 144, 131.

BRODIE GRUNDY – 154 POINTS

He can score away from the SCG, too. Grundy’s stats look like a midfielder, and a very good one – 31 disposals and 24 contested possessions. A bunch of hitouts to advantage also helped make up for a disposal efficiency of 39 per cent.

RORY LAIRD – 141 POINTS

Long-time SuperCoach stud has fallen off the radar this year but played his best game of the season against the Swans, racking up 34 disposals and six tackles. Great timing for his 11,000 owners.

LOSERS

LUKE RYAN – 79 POINTS

Almost 8000 coaches traded in the No.1 scoring defender of the season fresh of the Dockers’ bye, and with good reason. But they didn’t account for some tight attention from the Dogs resulting in just 15 disposals, six marks and Ryan’s lowest score of the year.

LACHIE NEALE – 70 POINTS

One of many big names with a target on their back this round, Neale had Marcus Windhager in his back pocket all night. He fought his way to 20 disposals, well short of his 38 the week before.

JORDAN DAWSON – 79 POINTS

A sore foot and close attention from James Jordon made for a tough night for the Crows skipper. He will enjoy the week off.

ZAK BUTTERS – 76 POINTS

The Port Adelaide midfield star was another on the taggers’ hit list this weekend, perhaps for the first time in his young career. He struggled to 17 disposals and could come under heat from the MRO after losing his cool in a tangle with Tom Green.

TOM POWELL – 37 POINTS

A horror result for the 18,000 coaches who have held onto Powell in the hope of solid scores through the bye rounds. He was one of the few Roos to miss out on the party early, with only two touches in the first quarter and just 12 for the game. He also managed to give away a crucial 50m penalty to Nick Daicos in the third term that resulted in a Magpie goal.

TOBY McMULLIN – 3 POINTS

The young Giants forward has made an art form of coming on as the sub and blasting to 50-plus points, but it didn’t happen on Sunday. In 23 minutes he managed just two touches, including a behind – which counts as an ineffective kick in SuperCoach.

NOAH CUMBERLAND – 2 POINTS

Cumberland played the first three quarters before being subbed off with four touches for the day, and just one on target. In his defence, Richmond’s delivery inside 50 didn’t make life easy for any of the Tiger forwards.
