Al Paton

Matt Flynn to Ned Reeves

Riley Collier-Dawkins to Lachie Whitfield

Miles Bergman to Callum Coleman-Jones

The floor of my house is covered with screwed up pieces of paper featuring trade plans to try to get me through the next two weeks. After initially facing a battle to get 18 on field in Round 13, I suddenly have huge problems next round with Richmond players also missing. Flynn to Reeves is a no-brainer for the cash generation, even though it doesn’t give me any extra numbers over the byes, but I add one to my Round 14 tally by trading Riley Collier-Dawkins a week early to grab Lachie Whitfield (moving Rory Laird into the midfield). Bergman being selected by Port Adelaide this week is a bit of a spanner in the works but I think CCJ is a must have, even if it costs me an on-field player next week — Bergman might not keep his spot and even if he does his average is 51. This is just part one of a two-week plan that will give me 19 available players this week and probably 16-17 next week, but I hope that will be reasonably competitive.

Tim Michell

Jordan Ridley to Lachie Whitfield

Matthew Flynn to Callum Coleman-Jones

Tyler Brockman to Jacob Edwards

Jy Farrar or Alec Waterman to Trent Bianco via DPP

Bianco and Coleman-Jones have forced my hand with their stellar performances last week. Both are set to make plenty of cash and will provide valuable coverage for the run home thanks to their DPP status (Bianco being DEF-MID and Coleman-Jones RUC-FWD). Yes, it means I am likely to play with 16 in Round 14, but I won’t be the only coach feeling the pinch. I’m unsure whether to trade Farrar or Waterman, but Gold Coast could make that decision for me at selection anyway. The big call this round is Lachie Whitfield or Aaron Hall, who are only separated by $1500 and have similar break evens. I desperately need a forward so still might end up with Hall, but long-term planning tells me offloading Ridley for Whitfield (albeit a risky play) might benefit my team most. It would likely mean I could trade Jayden Short — who has a three-round average of 87 — to Patrick Dangerfield next round.

The Phantom

Matt Flynn to Ned Reeves

James Rowe to Aaron Hall

Hunter Clark to Lachie Whitfield

Anthony Scott to Callum Coleman-Jones

After a big first bye-round, like many, I’m looking OK in Round 13. So I’ll be using the addition of two extra trades to fast track my plan. It initially involved moving Clark on at his bye, but after last week’s performance, I’m going early, especially with Whitfield available. Rowe out also helps prepare for Round 14 and Hall is the best option - I think - after five consecutive KFC SuperCoach tons. Flynn to Reeves gives me the cash to execute the moves while Scott to Coleman-Jones, although it gives me one less player in Round 14, sets me up money-wise - and, all going to plan, will actually result in an extra premium. The -102 breakeven is hard to pass up, too. Could I trade him after one price rise at, potentially, $240k? Maybe. Especially with the Hawks confirming Jai Newcombe’s debut. Caleb Poulter to Patrick Dangerfield is a lock next week - even though his price could still be falling - and I’ll also been targeting one more premium midfielder.

Dan Batten

Hunter Clark to Lachie Whitfield

Nat Fyfe to Josh Kelly

Matt Flynn to Ned Reeves

Martin Frederick or Finlay Macrae to Callum Coleman-Jones

After making just the one trade last round, I will be using all four trades this week to fix some issues. I’ll also be putting my trust in Leon Cameron – something all KFC SuperCoaches know is fraught with danger. I am still in disbelief that Clark managed just 24 points against the Swans – including just three in the second half – and with another high break even, it is time to say bon voyage and bring in Whitfield. The news that Fyfe could play out the season without surgery was a surprise, but with the likelihood of missing this week and his bye the week after, I think the best option is to trade. The upside of Kelly is appealing with North Melbourne, Carlton and Hawthorn in his next three and he looks to be back to his best with consistent centre-bounce minutes. Reeves and Coleman-Jones loom as must-have rookies for the run home and I will use CCJ as an F6-7 loop with two forward premium slots still to fill, while Reeves can fill the void if Brodie Grundy misses in Round 15.

Trade grades: Expert verdict on massive SuperCoach moves

How are you using your four trades in KFC SuperCoach this week? Our expert rate the best and worst moves for Round 13.

TRADED IN

CALLUM COLEMAN-JONES $161,200 RUC/FWD

Al Paton: BUY — When rookies who can score this well come along you just have to take them. Round 14 will hurt, though.

Tim Michell: BUY — Even if it ruins you for Round 14. I’m prepared to play with 16 in Round 14 to make sure I have him. That’s how good he’s been in the past two weeks. He arguably could have scored even more against Essendon, too. Straight swap for Matthew Flynn.

The Phantom: BUY — The Round 14 bye isn’t great but as a pure cash-generating rookie – when there aren’t many others around – with a -102 break even, he’s hard to overlook.

Dan Batten: BUY — While his Round 14 bye hurts just about everybody, his cash generation, scoring potential and dual-position status outweighs the short-term pain.

Young Hawks ruckman Ned Reeves.
Young Hawks ruckman Ned Reeves.

NED REEVES $123,900 RUC

AP: BUY — He even plays in Round 14, what’s not to love?

TM: BUY — I traded Brodie Grundy to him last week which might be a bit extreme for some, but Reeves is a great option who is projected to make more than $80k this round. He should play most, if not every, week for the rebuilding Hawks.

TP: BUY — Unless you’re keeping Matt Flynn as your way back to Brodie Grundy if you traded the star Pie, Flynn to Reeves is your move. It’s mine.

DB: BUY — Downgrading Matt Flynn to Reeves is a no-brainer. Should put up solid scores during the byes and make some nice cash in his promising ruck role.

TRENT BIANCO $123,900 MID/DEF

AP: BUY — Could you use all three trades this week on CCJ, Reeves and Bianco? It would set up your bench and cash generation for the second half of the year.

TM: BUY — I think CCJ is more of a must-have if you can only fit one in due to your Round 14 structure. But Bianco has shown in two games he’s a classy user by foot and that equals plenty of KFC SuperCoach points. It’s a bonus he can provide DEF-MID cover, too.

TP: BUY — Another great option, who looks to have even better long-term job security than CCJ. The extra $40k might come in handy, too.

DB: BUY — DEF/MID status is a big plus and he looks like getting a sustained run in the Pies side.

LACHIE WHITFIELD $503,600 DEF

AP: BUY — Have had my eye on him all year and the planets are aligning. News he trained away from the main group this week is a slight concern so I’ll wait until about 3.18pm on Sunday to hit the trade button.

TM: BUY — The best premium upgrade this week. If only I had a spot left in defence for him …

TP: BUY — After missing the early rounds through injury, Whitfield has built into the season nicely, posting KFC SuperCoach scores of 110 and 120 before the bye. Great price

DB: BUY — Has his mojo back, has already had his bye and is very affordable.

LUKE EDWARDS $117,300 MID

AP: PASS — Looked pretty good in game one but he has — cue horror movie music — the Round 14 bye.

TM: PASS — Would prefer to wait another week, even though he was impressive on debut against Carlton. Just wonder how long he lasts when the cavalry returns for the Eagles.

TP: PASS — Impressive on debut but with the Eagles having so many to come back in, I’m passing for now. Instead, cross your fingers for a mid-season draftee to pop up.

DB: PASS — With CCJ and Bianco other quality options that have the R14 bye, you can afford to wait for Edwards, who will play his third game in R15.

Max Holmes at Cats training. Picture: Alison Wynd
Max Holmes at Cats training. Picture: Alison Wynd

MAX HOLMES $121,800 MID/FWD

AP: PASS — The Cats have a lot of players to come back in and even if he plays this week there’s no guarantee he’ll play in Round 14, which would be a terrible outcome.

TM: PASS — His job security is a huge question mark. I like him, don’t get me wrong, but will be stunned if he plays every week.

TP: PASS — With up to five expected to come back in for the Cats this week, kiss this dream goodbye.

DB: PASS — Hard to see him being picked with a trio of midfield stars set to return for the Cats.

AARON HALL $502,100 FWD

AP: BUY — Which forwards are going to score more than him?

TM: BUY — I’ve got him behind Whitfield and Touk Miller as the third-best premium buy of Round 13. But if you need a forward upgrade, Hall is your man. If he stays fit, he’s going to easily be a top-six scorer from rounds 13-23.

TP: BUY — Has posted five consecutive tons and injury appears the only thing that could slow him down in the current role. Has history but it’s now hard to argue against the body of work, especially with the two extra trades.

DB: BUY — Durability is the only concern, but we can’t talk down his achievements any longer.

TOUK MILLER $616,000 MID

AP: PASS — Love him as a POD but he’s very expensive and you’ll get some more great options to finish your midfield next week.

TM: BUY — Wish I had the money/midfield spots left to grab him. I’m not concerned by Matthew Rowell’s return impacting his scoring. He’s certain to be a contender for a top-eight midfielder and will boost your score in Round 14 when other coaches are hurting.

TP: BUY/PASS — With a huge five-round average of 132, Miller is definitely a target to consider coming off the bye. But, at $616k, he’s not cheap.

DB: BUY — The tackling machine shouldn’t be affected by the return of Matt Rowell and he shapes as a ripping POD.

Touk Miller is in 2 per cent of KFC SuperCoach teams. Picture: Jerad Williams

JOSH KELLY $562,300 MID

AP: BUY — Has one of the highest scoring ceilings in the midfield and two extra trades lessens the risk if he breaks down.

TM: BUY — In formidable touch since moving back into the middle and has North Melbourne this week. He covers the next two bye rounds and the extra trades will help if his durability is an issue and you need to trade him later in the year.

TP: BUY — After five consecutive KFC SuperCoach tons since returning to the Giants’ on-ball rotation, Kelly is my pick of the midfield upgrade targets this round.

DB: BUY — Kelly is ripe for the picking with North Melbourne this week and matches against Carlton and Hawthorn after that.

JACK STEELE $598,500 MID

AP: PASS — Has been enormous the past two weeks but I’d look for better value. Could go huge against the Crows, though.

TM: PASS — But only until Round 15. Round 14 is going to be hard enough without bringing in a player who has the dreaded bye.

TP: WAIT — He’s back in form, that’s for sure, but can you really afford to carry another premium who won’t be there in Round 14? He will shoot past $600k this week but I’d let the $30k go unless you’re playing for league glory only.

DB: PASS… Unless you are looking good for Round 14 – or are prepared to throw that week altogether.

TRADED OUT

JAMES ROWE $295,600 FWD

AP: TRADE — Clearing out some rookies with the Round 14 bye this week is a smart play.

TM: TRADE — You’re going to trade him when he has the bye next round anyway. He’s been fun to watch but now isn’t the time for sentiment in KFC SuperCoach. Seeya Jimmy.

TP: TRADE — Most KFC SuperCoaches are looking OK for on-field numbers this week so get ahead of the curve and upgrade him to a forward coming off the bye.

DB: TRADE — A Round 14 bye player and will leak cash this week.

RILEY COLLIER-DAWKINS $237,900 MID

AP: TRADE — Round 14 bye and might not be in your best 18 this week anyway with his centre bounce attendances drying up.

TM: HOLD — Unless you have 20-21 already playing this round. He’s shown he can score 70-plus which would likely be enough to be in your best 18. Trade him next week when he has a bye like almost half the league.

TP: TRADE — If you can upgrade him, do it because there aren’t many non-Round 14 rookie options around – unless Jai Newcombe pops up. Otherwise, he’s your way to Trent Bianco or CCJ.

DB: TRADE/HOLD — Break even is manageable but if you can get a premium for an extra week it may be worth pulling the trigger early.

TOM HIGHMORE $186,900 DEF

AP: TRADE — See my comments on Rowe and RCD. Round 14 rookies have to go!

TM: HOLD — He’s one of the only players left for the injury-ravaged Saints. Almost has to be chosen now by Brett Ratten. Just make sure he’s not on field in Round 15 when scoring returns to best 22 as he’s prone to scoring less than 40.

TP: TRADE/HOLD — Hard one. At $187k, where do you go? If you have the cash to upgrade, perfect. Otherwise, wait and see what else pops up.

DB: TRADE/HOLD — While he has the Round 14 bye, a trade to say, Bianco, will only net you $70k. A number of outs for the Saints could give him a decent run in the side.

Matthew Flynn has served his purpose in KFC SuperCoach.
Matthew Flynn has served his purpose in KFC SuperCoach.

MATTHEW FLYNN $367,700 RUC

AP: TRADE — Flynn to Reeves ... drool.

TM: TRADE — With urgency if you don’t have Callum Coleman-Jones and Ned Reeves. Like Rowe, Flynn has done his job as one of the cash cows of the season.

TP: TRADE/HOLD — Unless you’re holding as a way to get back to Brodie Grundy – and as an extra player in Round 14 – cash him in with bubble boy Ned Reeves.

DB: TRADE — Flynn has served us well but now it is time to cash in.

CHAD WARNER $300,800 FWD

AP: TRADE/HOLD — Another Round 14 rookie (why are there so many!) but he’s probably one you could hang onto for one more week.

TM: TRADE — The Swans flagged he was hurt in Round 12 and could be rested in Round 13. He’s then got the Round 14 bye. Downgrade him to Coleman-Jones.

TP: TRADE — Prime upgrade candidate this week to help prepare for Round 14. North’s Aaron Hall could be your man.

DB: TRADE/HOLD — You can afford to hold him for another week as one of the most consistent rookie scorers.

Nat Fyfe is injured — again.
Nat Fyfe is injured — again.

NAT FYFE $538,600 MID

AP: TRADE — If he’s ruled out this week and we know he’s missing Round 14, extra trades are the excuse you need to pull the trigger.

TM: TRADE — Sounds like he’s going to be out for a while as the Dockers deal with an injury crisis. Trading him might help fix your bye structure if you can use DPP to nab Lachie Whitfield or Aaron Hall.

TP: HOLD/TRADE — The Dockers have just said he’s ‘unlikely’ for this week but that’s it. Josh Kelly and Touk Miller are there for the straight swap this round, otherwise you could wait and give yourself the Round 13 bye players to choose from, too.

DB: TRADE — No official diagnosis yet, but it doesn’t look good for the SuperCoach champ.

JAMES JORDON $367,000 MID

AP: HOLD — Part of my Round 14 trade plans but hoping to get one more 80-plus score out of one of the best buys of 2021.

TM: HOLD — Six of his past seven scores are 82 or more which suggests he’ll be in your best 22 in Round 13. He doesn’t get big numbers but his efficiency and tackling help rack up KFC SuperCoach points.

TP: TRADE/HOLD. Another solid score from the Demons cash cow but, like a few on this list, he will miss Round 14. Upgrade him this week, if it gives you more flexibility next

DB: TRADE/HOLD. Averaging 80 points in his last two and could produce another solid total this week.

HARRISON JONES $258,700 FWD

AP: TRADE/HOLD — Has the bye, time to cash in ... although he will be back for Round 14. If your numbers are OK this week you could cash in a Round 14 rookie instead.

TM: TRADE — Has a bye, is coming off a score of 17 and his break even is 13 points higher than his average.

TP: TRADE/HOLD — Might be an extra body next week but, like some of the rookies showed in Round 12 — think Rowe, Warner, RCD – that may not mean much, especially after his own 17-point performance.

DB: TRADE — Has done well to get to $260k so cash in while he has the bye.

Harrison Jones has been a handy rookie pick.
Harrison Jones has been a handy rookie pick.

LACHLAN McNEIL $239,900 MID

AP: TRADE — Unlike Jones, he probably won’t play in Round 14 after the Bulldogs’ bye.

TM: TRADE — Three consecutive scores under 50 have pushed his break even to 68. That’s a danger sign even if he didn’t have a bye this round.

TP: TRADE — The Bulldogs play in Round 14, but McNeil was dropped last week so it may not even matter.

DB: TRADE — Back on the outer and like Jones, has the bye this week.

BRODIE GRUNDY $627,700 RUC

AP: HOLD/TRADE/I DON’T KNOW — Was firmly in the ‘hold’ camp last week but the looming Round 14 disaster, less than convincing Nathan Buckley comments about his return and the fact we have two excellent rookie rucks on the bubble have me wavering. The move would be to swap him for Reeves/Coleman-Jones then use that cash to snare an absolute superstar. Not sure if I’ll go through with it, but it’s definitely up for consideration.

TM: HOLD — If you held last week, you’re only two weeks (one game plus a bye) away from getting Grundy back in Round 15. Use Ned Reeves to cover him and swing Callum Coleman-Jones forward instead if you’re trading Grundy to fit them all into your side.

TP: HOLD/TRADE — It’s too late for the premium replacement trade but, if you’re playing catch-up, trading to CCJ or Reeves, and bringing in two premiums with the cash, is worth some thought. Especially if you still have Flynn.

DB: HOLD — It might just one more week that he misses, when you consider Collingwood’s bye.
