If you want in-form players in your KFC Supercoach team, you can’t go past Marcus Bontempelli.

The Bont enters the home-and-away season as the No. 1 scorer of the pre-season, averaging 148.5 over the Bulldogs’ two Marsh Series games.

Pre-season matches aren’t a perfect formguide as coaches manage players’ time on ground.

A better indication can be found by calculating a players’ average score per 100 minutes – about what we can expect from Round 1.

And Bont comes out on top of those numbers, too.

His scores of 195 and 102 came in 79.8 per cent time on ground – an average of 152.3 points per 100 minutes.

The Champion Data numbers also shine a light on bargain-priced Demon Jack Viney (average 148.2 per 100 minutes), No. 1 draft pick Matt Rowell (average 129.5 per 100 minutes) and ruckman Max Gawn, who scored only 68 in his one Marsh Series appearance.

That came in a half – if he scored like that for 100 minutes he would pocket 144 points.

Time on ground numbers can explain some low scores – Scott Pendlebury scored just 45 points but that came from 55.5 per cent time on ground in his one Marsh Series game – but not all.

Teammate Brodie Grundy’s 65 points in the same game came from 87 per cent time on ground.

Add his slightly underwhelming 80 from the State of Origin game and do we have a ruck problem?

Star Cats Gary Ablett and Tom Hawkins played in both of Geelong’s Marsh games and finished with averages under 40 despite spending more than 60 per cent time on ground.

Conversely, Stephen Coniglio’s 135 against Richmond was backed up by 101 in the Bushfire Relief game.

He enters the season as a bargain midfield premium.

The award for pre-season consistency goes to Todd Goldstein, who scored an even 100 in both his Marsh games, Josh Dunkley (103 twice) and Marlion Pickett (61 twice).
