COULD it have been the moment where the Greater Western Sydney Giants started their unlikely run to a 2018 premiership?
And typically leading the way was their co-captain Callan Ward, who at 28 is in the form of his life. Ward was the grunt and Lachie Whitfield the outside cream in the Giants’ vital win over Richmond.
SEASON RANKINGS: WHO IS LEADING THE COMP IN 2018?
WEEKLY RANKINGS: WHAT DID ROBBO + ANDO MAKE OF R17?
Both figure prominently in our Rd 17 rankings along with a defensive ball magnet in Rory Laird, roaming forward named Tom Lynch and a couple of young guns in Angus Brayshaw and Hugh McCluggage.
Mark Robinson asked the question on the weekend who was the last defender to get 40 or more possessions in a game as Laird did in Adelaide’s vital win over Geelong?
The answer was Rory Laird in rounds one and two this season, a year where he’s averaging a remarkable 33 possessions a game. So don’t tag him at your peril.
Then there is Max Gawn, a player who seems to thrive on the attention that goes with being highly publicised. His 2018 season may just be the most consistent by a ruckman in recent times, although Brodie Grundy isn’t far behind.
Hugh McCluggage took time to find his feet, unlike his teammate Cameron Rayner, but isn’t he blossoming into just the player Brisbane hoped for when taking him at Pick 3.
