Collingwood remains hopeful Dan McStay’s latest knee injury is “on the minor side”.
McStay suffered another setback to his left knee, the same knee which ruled him out of the 2023 premiership, in the Magpies’ 41-point Anzac Day victory over Essendon.
Magpies’ coach Craig McRae said the key forward would have scans over the weekend but was optimistic given Jeremy Howe’s short return from the same injury.
“Dan’s got an MCL of some degree, we don’t know until we get it scanned,” McRae said.
“I’ll give you some context, ‘Howey’ did that and played the next week, he could be out for four to six weeks, we don’t know.
“We’ll know more tomorrow, I don’t want to crystal ball it and have a guess.
“We’re hoping it’s on the minor side, that’s what we’re getting told at the moment and will know more in coming days.”
Veteran livewire Jamie Elliott took ownership of the Magpies’ forward line in McStay’s absence, booting five goals.
Collingwood’s sixth win in a row was achieved without star captain Darcy Moore, who pulled out from the match with what McRae described as “vertigo symptoms”.
Nick Daicos stood in as the Magpies’ captain and delivered 31 disposals, 11 clearances, nine inside 50s, 619 metres gained, nine score involvements and a goal.
McRae said Moore was on the mend but was still racing against the clock to be fit for the Magpies’ blockbuster Saturday night bout with Geelong at the MCG next week.
“My last report is he’s improving, he’s still getting some vertigo signs and he’s on antibiotics,” he said.
“It’s a day-to-day at the moment but I think he’s improving, still not enough to train though, hopefully that improves over the next couple of days.”
