‘Nose beers’: Bailey Smith’s Instagram remark goes viral

Bailey Smith, the most followed AFL player on Instagram, has raised eyebrows with a questionable response to a follower.

Baz wouldn't have played vs. anyone else

Geelong’s Bailey Smith has once again set social media alight after making an eyebrow raising remark.

The 24-year-old took to Instagram on Friday, a day after the Cats had taken care of business against his former side the Western Bulldogs.

FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer.

The upload showed off several moments from throughout the contest, but it was in the comments section where it all unfolded.

One follower asked the Cats star whether he’d had “nose beers after the game mate?”.

Smith didn’t shy away from the question and responded by writing: “na bro, after the flag maybe tho.”

For those unaware, nose beers is a common expression for the illicit drug cocaine.

Smith then took to his Instagram stories where he shared the comment while writing: “taking the piss fyi @sponsors ily.”

Just joking.
Just joking.

While some have, pardon the pun, turned their nose up at Smith’s remark … his coach has come to his defence.

Chris Scott appeared on ABC Sport and said Smith represented the new age of footy players who are social media stars.

“My take on it, not just in the footy world but in society, you can’t have it both ways.

“If you are going to embrace this idea that the new world is sharing everything online and bantering and having a bit of fun, but as soon as it goes over the line we all have conniptions.

“We all like comics that are on edge, but as soon as they say something that is confronting to someone’s sensibility, we want to cancel them.

“I just think that’s a loss of perspective, and with Bailey, remember he is 24.

“You’ve got to be careful that these things don’t drift, and drift, and drift until it becomes something uncontrollable, but I think it’s an example of keeping everything in perspective.

“It’s a balance between, certainly not condoning behaviour you prefer didn’t happen, but also keeping it in perspective as much as possible.”

While Smith’s social media activity quickly went viral, his on field feats are shining brighter than his oiled up abs.

After joining the Cats ahead of the 2025 season, Smith has hit the ground running and is currently the equal favourite alongside Nick Daicos for the Brownlow Medal at $5 after starting the season at $81.

Ahead of the clash against his former side he was second in the AFL Coaches Association award, two votes behind Kangaroos ruckman Tristan Xerri.

On Thursday night he delivered once again as he racked up 33 disposals to help lead Geelong to the 20.7 (127) to 16.17 (113) victory.
