Here’s everything you missed on TV last night.
RAZOR ADMITS ‘I DON’T UNDERSTAND’ 15M INCONSISTENCIES
AFL 360
Retired umpire ‘Razor’ Ray Chamberlain says even he is struggling with the inconsistencies surrounding the 15m as fans of footy are in uproar over some of the calls this season.
It is the in-vogue umpiring call of the season so far, with umpires often calling kicks as ‘play on’, despite appearing to travel further than the 15m required.
Chamberlain said on AFL 360 he didn’t understand why there was a crackdown on the rule.
“There’s been no rule change. It still only has to go 15m,” he said.
“So I don’t understand why it is.
“Clearly what we’re seeing on the field is a difference in how this is being implemented.
“When an umpire is paying a mark or when they are not.
“I saw one that went eight metres at best on the weekend and we award a mark, that was just an aberration, it’s an error.”
There was another humorous decision on Thursday night when Josh Daicos was awarded a 50m penalty that was actually 77.2m, with Daicos ultimately kicking a goal from the error.
Chamberlain said on AFL 360 there had been a change in processes when it comes to 50m penalties.
“In the last two and a half years, this is new. What would normally happen is the umpire would take the player the whole way and they’d own this (50m penalty),” he said.
“Now what you do is you hand it over to your colleague.
“There is a number of reasons. What will happen is Daicos will get the ball and Bailey will often get in the road, try to be a bit smart and delay and what have you.
“Then we run the risk of paying 100m, so the umpire who awards the 50m, his responsibility is now to manage the initial 10m and clear Bailey out.”
EVEN DAICOS KNEW HE TRAVELLED TOO FAR
AFL 360
As Josh Daicos was running down the wing of the Gabba, he could feel himself travelling further than the 50m he was supposed to.
Brisbane’s Zac Bailey moved on the mark and the umpire penalised him for it, marching Daicos down towards the Collingwood goals.
But the 50m quickly turned into 77.2m, and Daicos conceded he knew the measuring stick was off.
“I did pick up on it quite early because I knew I was running for a while,” he said on AFL 360.
“Once I was inside 50 I’m running in and taking the shot before they realised how far I got.
“Quite fortuitous with that one.”
Daicos went back and slotted the goal, despite the protest from Bailey who knew how far the 50m penalty actually was.
HEAVY HITTING RECRUITS TOO HEAVY?
Agenda Setters
Kane Cornes has called Hawthorn’s big-name recruits as the “few chinks” in the premiership contender’s armour.
Tom Barrass and Josh Battle arrived at the club in the off-season, just weeks after Hawthorn fell short of a preliminary final berth.
Cornes says he thinks both Barrass and Battle have dropped off their production through their start at their new club, and suggested Barrass needs to lose some weight.
“I think he’s not fit enough,” he said on Agenda Setters.
“I don’t have his skinfolds handy.
“I think you can look at the way he’s presenting.”
Battle is averaging less disposals and marks but has increased his tackle and rebound 50 numbers, while Barrass has also dropped off in his disposal, marks and rebound 50s.
Luke Hodge and Dale Thomas both leapt to the defence of the recruits, with Hodge saying neither player needs to be the main man, like they did at West Coast and St Kilda respectively.
Meanwhile Thomas said the back six was still developing chemistry.
“It’s not great vision but I wouldn’t say he’s out of shape,” he said.
“It’s a work in progress that back six.
“It’s not concerning just yet.”
