Port Adelaide delays decision into club great Warren Tredrea’s board position amid investigation into podcast episode

Port Adelaide began reviewing Warren Tredrea’s board position six weeks ago over a controversial podcast episode, but there has been another delay.

Port Adelaide has delayed a decision on whether to sanction club great turned board member Warren Tredrea.

Tredrea’s director’s position hangs in the balance amid a lengthy investigation, conducted by Power chairman David Koch and deputy Jamie Restas, into comments a guest made on his podcast.

Club concerns that the 2004 premiership captain violated governance standards arose in June after the Jewish Council of Australia condemned an episode of his ‘Ballsy’ podcast from May, saying comments from British Army veteran AJ Roberts amplified far-right antisemitic conspiracy theories.

Six weeks after Port announced the review, the board on Friday postponed any resolution until their next meeting.

Tredrea, the Power’s football director, is understood to have responded to the club’s concerns and the board is taking its time to consider it as part of the governance process.

It is unclear what specific policies the 46-year-old may have breached.

In June, Tredrea vehemently denied he was antisemitic while unequivocally condemning war and genocide in social media posts.

Hours after the Power announced its review into Tredrea’s position two months ago, he responded saying the purpose of his podcast provided a platform for people to present their views in an unfiltered forum, not push his personal opinions.

“I understand some of these may be uncomfortable for some to listen to,” he posted on social media on June 25.

“It’s why I tag my social media posts publicising each episode as, ‘Unfiltered. Unapologetic. Ballsy … Disclaimer’. For entertainment only. Views are guests’ own. Not professional advice.

“I was attracted to interviewing Mr Roberts because he was a veteran who has fought for his country, seen ugly things in battle, and now is sceptical of the government he fought in the name of.

“Over the last few years, I have found many veterans who share similar scepticism about their governments following service for their country.

“Let me make it abundantly clear. I unequivocally condemn war and genocide, and seek only to share other perspectives of what has been a very one way reported narrative in the mainstream media.

“I am not in any way, shape, or form, an antisemite, and consider it defamatory for anyone to accuse me as such.”

All-time Power leading goalkicker Tredrea, who booted 549 goals from 255 AFL games from 1997-2010, joined the board as one of two members-elected directors in February last year.

His term expires at the end of 2026.

In announcing the investigation in June, Koch said club directors were entitled to personal views, but there were concerns recent content Tredrea had published breached governance standards.

“The club is committed to upholding the professional standards our members, partners and the community expect and deserve,” Koch said.

Tredrea would not return calls.
